A Chef-Driven, Neighborhood Pastrami Stand - Johnny's West Adams (+ Impromptu Pastrami Battle! Langer's vs. Johnny's vs. Brent's Deli vs. Ugly Drum) [Thoughts + Pics]

How much time can someone spend in LA and take part on this board without trying a pastrami sandwich at Langer’s and still be said to have a life?

You know I’m right here listening.

Hahahaha. I’d like to say I am very particular to the “correct” food pairings (whatever that means). But once my kid started to put ketchup on hot dogs I knew I lost the battle. Everybody just eat whatever they want as long as it doesn’t infringe on my ability to enjoy my pastrami on rye with mustard. ONLY.

I :hearts: ketchup on hot dogs!

“I’ll have pastrami on white bread with mayonnaise.” @robert

Still waiting for a picture of the infamous #65 to make it to FTC, pastrami, cream cheese and tomato.

@Chowseeker1999 @porkybelly a Langers OOE journey?

I’ll gladly assist!

That’s a controversial stance! I’d tend to agree that pastrami is better without the accoutrements. That being said, the #19 sub turkey for pastrami is when the sandwich reaches perfection. It’s true at Langer’s and Daughters deli does a hell of a good job with it as well.

Sub out Langer’s hot pastrami for cold cut turkey??? :scream: :sob:
This is an instant FTC ban, right?

(just joshin’, @Helper_Monkey)

Make sure to try different egg creams while in NY!

A good tongue deli sandwich is underrated, everyone usually talks about pastrami and corned beef, but a well prepared tongue is delish. I also look for taco trucks that serve a good lengua. Brother’s Cousins on the Westside, across street from Primo’s has a good version.

I write this fully knowing I’m opening myself up for all kinds of tongue jokes and puns. Heck, I had to edit the above since I was tempted by some lewd puns…

Hot pastrami with cold Swiss, cold coleslaw, and room temp bread is the real affront to humanity. Turkey in its place is when it starts to make the most sense. Pastrami is a different beast and doesn’t need those shenanigans! (Mustard and rye. That’s it!)

#19 with turkey at Langer’s, and a turkey Papa at Daughter‘s Deli! If you don’t know, now you know!

I agree with this. Your substitution makes more sense now.
But… I would need to get down a pretty long list of other things I want to eat at Langer’s before I arrived at #19 w/ Turkey. Like this, for example:

YES!! WIth fresh cut white onion… YES!!!

I always laugh at Chicago residents and fans of chicago style dogs who are so strident in their opposition to ketchup in hot dogs while touting the perfect chicago dog with all those different toppings.

So, it’s okay to bury the damn dog in a garden but adding ketchup to it desecrates the sacred balance of flavors and the nuance of the dog is lost? Yeah… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Hi @Gr8pimpin,

I think I’m dreaming right now as I type this, because I think I just read that you finally went to Langer’s? And more importantly you enjoyed their legendary Pastrami Sandwich?

Yay! So happy you enjoyed it, pretty good right?

Agree, I actually think the salty, sweet, sour of the cole slaw goes just fine w/ pastrami.

Hi @JeetKuneBao,

!!! You’ve never had the Corned Beef at Langer’s? :open_mouth: (Well, I don’t blame you, since whenever we go to Langer’s we have to have the Pastrami… I regret it if I leave there without having it.) But for someone who’s done a OOE at Il Romanista(!) and have your Uncle Bruce as your avatar, I think you can tackle both a Langer’s Pastrami and try their Corned Beef next time!

@JeetKuneBao @Gr8pimpin for your next visit at Langer’s:

  • #54 (Modified): Beef Tongue & Corned Beef Sandwich: It is ridiculous. SO GOOD!

  • #33 - Patty Melt: In honor of Servorg (on our old board)! Ridiculous.

  • #27 - Chopped Egg & Chopped Liver Sandwich: I don’t even like Liver normally but this combo of Langer’s Egg Salad and Chopped Liver was fantastic!

  • Corned Beef Hash & Eggs: Old-school American Diner-style Corned Beef Hash!

  • #88 - Hot Corned Beef, Sauerkraut, Swiss Cheese Grilled on Rye Sandwich: It’s their take on a Reuben. Eat immediately (to enjoy the toasty crunch)!
