I hope you filed a police report for all those robberies.

Ah yes, that’s it… Hits the spot!

GTA

Chorizo pizza -:heart_eyes::heart_eyes:amazing, maybe the post Lett era isn’t so bad after all. Excellent in flavor and execution, crust was perfection and I loved the balance of slightly sweet fennel with the spice from the chili flake. Pizza perfection @lapizzamaven @Chowseeker1999 @Gr8pimpin and tops in the city right now. Going back for their amazing lamb pizza very soon.

Breakfast burrito - interesting flavors, perfectly executed but overshadowed by the chorizo pizza

Wi Jammin

Jerk chicken - this was  really good, nice smokey flavor and a decent amount of heat, juicy tender bone in chicken. Loved the spicy bits that saturated the rice and beans. Even the cabbage was good. Also grabbed a chicken patty which I thought was subpar. The dough was pretty dry and hard like a cracker, stay with the entrees.

Phillips BBQ

Rib tips - perhaps the best rib tips in LA (I think so) and the sauce is addictive. The wait was pretty horrid, but so glad it was worth the wait because these rib tips are fiyah :fire::fire::fire: Nice smokey flavor, luscious texture from the cooked down collagen with dat sauce. We bang banged this with Wi Jammin, why haven’t I had Jamaican and hood BBQ before?

Damn, that’s a good-looking pie!

Forgive me, GTA is Gjusta?

Funny, almost went to Phillips yesterday. Yum!!!

All the food in your post looks great!!

Phillips BBQ Rib Tips with MIXED sauce is so damn good. The links with the mixed sauce is also damn good. The links are from a local South LA institution.

Get the mixed sauce at Phillips.

I think Gjelina Take Away, which is located near/next to Gjelina and NOT near Gjusta.

Hi @A5KOBE,

Thanks for the report back. Been so bummed to hear about your Gjusta visit and Gjelina is still closed that we forgot about GTA. Good to hear and it’s close by.

Phillips BBQ: Thanks. After Heritage Barbecue, I’m not sure I want to try our local BBQ places (it’s just not going to compare). Which Phillips branch did you get those at / that you prefer?

Tfw you’re trying to go to Verona Beach for some GTA chorizo pizza but you end up pissing off the Temple Drive Ballas

That was my first for Wi Jammin, got any dishes I need to try next?

It might have been a blessing, it was super packed and the wait was pretty long. Never seen Phillips this crowded, they ran of ribs super early and many big orders with full sized trays. But I am more of a rib tips guy so it worked out for me, and I haven’t had Phillips probably since Bludsos was still in Compton and kicking myself for not coming here more often.

It’s their spot on Abbot Kinney, Gjelina Take Away.

Got these at the location right across from Johnnys West Adams on Crenshaw and Adams.

Me too, but GTA delivered the wow factor which gives me hope for Gjusta.

Curry Goat is my favorite dish there.

Catching up from some other weekend highlights:

PRD

You can definitely tell the amount of work the team at PRD puts into every order of Hainan Chicken. @JLee and co have turned it into a must order for me every time it’s offered. That might be fueled by scarcity, but when the quality is this high that might not even matter.

Pikunico

On my way out of ROW I remembered that Pikunico recently reopened and wanted to stop by to check in on them. I didn’t have the stomach real estate to order any of their (outstanding) fried chicken, but their Choconut Chip Cookie is low key one of my favorites in the city. I love how it is always slightly underdone in the center. I’ll be back soon to grab some chicken and salads.

Tsubaki / Ototo

I’ve been doing Sake School every Sunday since they started the COVID takeout offering. This week was a bit special because they did a tasting and tour with Brooklyn Kura. The first pour was of their Blue Door tokubetsu junmai nama, and the second was of their Number Fourteen junmai ginjo nama. The former leaned more savory, while the second was lighter and crisp.

In addition, Ototo whipped up a couple New York inspired snacks to include with the tasting. There was a sake and shiso cured salmon with miso cream cheese and furikake bagel chips, as well as a New York style cheesecake.

Also snagged a fig daifuku.

It was RFG.

Don’t sleep on their miso de leche shortbread cookie!

I was there with you and those snacks were pretty good! Along with the sake of course. I don’t think I’ve seen the Number Fourteen yet at my usual haunts so it was fun to taste them side-by-side.

I missed the fig daifuku but next time you should try giving the warabi mochi a shot! It’s different from other mochi I’ve had and for me was very tasty. Normally not a big mochi fan because it tends to be so chewy but this one was soft and supple. A lot easier to eat than others and a much better experience.

I haven’t seen Brooklyn Kura at any of the places I frequent either, but have in the Bay Area.

Good to hear about the mochi—I’ll check one of the flavors out next time because I really liked the consistency that it was around the fig. All of what their new pastry chef is doing is pretty neat and can’t wait to see where she’s headed with things.

Their chilled warabi mochi is perfect for this oppressive weather.
