August 2025 Rundown

Pretty commonplace practice in Vancouver to sell Lactaid with the ice cream. We in LA are latecomers to this one…

Does it actually taste like a tea egg?

It did! A mild one with the funk of the yolk coming through with the shaved topping

m joy

probably the ugliest and delicious thing i’ve had in awhile. a plate of gray meat on rice but so good. the soft, falling apart meat and rice are glistening with fat. even the carrot and onion slaw is good. dip the lamb in some chili sauce and eat with the carrots, onions and rice. kind of reminded me of hainan chicken but with lamb.

grilled items were solid too. ribs aren’t as spicy as it looks, has some heat and sweetness with crispy edges. i preferred the juicier, fiddy shades of gray, mound of meat.

review forthcoming @Sgee?

lamb rib, shank, rice, lamb bone soup

grilled lamb skewers

grilled ribs

this too

Boiled monochrome gray looking lamb should not taste this good !!! WTF???

I preferred the skewers at Ji Rong

Wasn’t brave enough to try the “Authentic Grassland Salted Milk Tea”

Cafe 2001/Yess

Monks Chirashi. Probably the highlight.

Play on the classic ume shiso maki with fresh plums.

Felt like I just walked into their prep hours. Restaurant smelled like smoke. Had to ask for the pickles and miso when I was half way finished with my bowl. Got 3 pieces lol. Had to ask again for my miso. Tasted like smoke???

Beautiful spot. Weird crappy service for an empty restaurant.

Cafe 2001. Avocado toast. A light schemer of avocado smash than a pile of slaw??? I thought this was called AVOCADO toast?

Forget this I am going to eat in SGV.

Was the watermelon cake sold out? That is the unicorn there.

Sounds like Persian doogh…

Went back tonight, it’s one of my favorite places in the Valley. @robert pointed out the prices are on the online menu and each table has several QR code postings that pull up the menu with prices, https://www.salsaandbeertogo.com/. They started the QR posting during Covid when people were scared of menus.
As @Gr8pimpin said prices have gone up quite a bit, but we have been in an inflationary spiral. Where haven’t prices gone up? The $1 tacos at my favorite taco stand are $2 now.
As you point out the amount of food they serve is astounding. I ordered my favorite menu item, the Carne Asada Combo. I paid $28.06 before tax and tip. I will get three meals out of it. Under $10 and it is delicious.

Went to M Joy today for lunch and enjoyed the heck out of exactly what you ordered. When I got home with some left overs, my wife commented that I could have asked for a free refill on the rice. Oh well. There is always next time.

In four years I’ve watched that go up from $10.99. The shrimp and asada was $12.99.

Yeah, 4 years is a long time, but it’s more than doubled, almost tripled. Isn’t that outpacing typical inflation?

I wonder also how much of that though has to do with beef prices. The national average for 1 pound of ground beef is at $6.25, the highest price since it’s been tracked.

It is outpacing inflation. Between beef prices and minimum wage increases it should only be 170% by my calculations. I still think it is a great deal, and I thank you for alerting me to the place, and I hope you and the family are well and happy!

In recent years restaurant costs in Los Angeles have outpaced inflation in general. Minimum wage has gone up, insurance reportedly as well, obviously food.

Maybe also they set their prices too low to start with.

A Ti
Went last week and it was full blown empty, which is sad, though not entirely surprising because the only reason I went is because most nights it’s the only last minute res available in the area. Pastor taco was excellent, heavily and warmly spiced. Duck leg seemed to be a signature, loved the mole that came with it. Top class tortillas, like 4 duck tacos for $27. I’ll be back.

Wildcrust
Another one of those places that seems to always be bookable. I thought it was solid, like an Eastside Ronan, the kind of pizza and veg place that was big like 5-10 years ago. But both one notch more chef-y and one notch more CPK (I had a lamb tzatziki pie).

Cafe 2001
Feels like a portal abroad in a way I like. Wouldn’t ever go out of my way for it but good and interesting food for a cafe, which is what it is after all.

I like a ti a lot and have been sad to see it empty too.

Hey there, there’s mezcal, wine and food fundraising in Boyle Heights on Aug 29 benefitting an Immigrant Justice clinic. I’ve been thinking about my meal last month at Districto Catorce and am so happy they’re doing this.

I’m not drinking alcohol these days so this is a miss for me, but I really like Chef Perez’s point of view.

This is a bummer, Smyth has been a Chicago highlight for me too. I wonder if Luke Feltz leaving for Noma had an impact on your recent experience.

I remember enjoying the concept behind Esmé and their ethos. I didn’t find the meal bad though. I wonder if their changing themes every 12 weeks creates inconsistency.

Miznon (GCM). Chicken sandwich. Good. No complaints (okay maybe the chicken was a little dry). A nice addition to GCM.

I wondered this too (re: Smyth). I’ll be back in town in a couple weeks and will try and stop by again to see if it was just a one off bad night

I went to M Joy and co-sign the opinions shared so far.

That boiled (?) lamb has no business being that good looking the way it does.

I thought the skewers at M Joy were the weakest link. I’d skip them next time. For me, the grilled ribs were the highlight, followed very closely by the boiled shank. The broth served with the shank was surprisingly rich, as well.

I tried this and I liked it a lot more than I expected to. I would get it again next time.
