August 2025 Rundown

Yes, it is YouTube.

Borit Gogae two minute YouTube review

I don’t eat a lot of Korean food so watching this might have made me more exuberant in mixing my foods.

Antico Nuovo for my girlfriend’s birthday; where the most memorable thing was…

foccacia with ricotta & pistachio · summer fruit salad. Whipped topping was very tasty; nectarines a little too early. Nice melon

linguine with crab and squash blossoms. Tender fresh proteins; linguine was a smidge too thin and a touch over. Nice light flavors and my preferred pasta profile

Ravioli with sweet corn and chanterelles. Tied with the pasta below, the top pasta of the evening.

foglie d’ulivo [pasta in olive leaf shape] with squab, cracklings, olives. Perfect al dente and the squab was as roasty as you’d like it

*The pork ribs. Disappointed. Great wood-fired aroma and air but for the price? … *

bone marrow set in potato puree. Happily would have paid up to have four more of those bone pillars. Loved this.

broccolini side – touch too acidic but fresh bite

Ice cream trio! We heard the ice cream was a big win here but neglected to ask about portion size. Chocolate, pistachio (yeah!), peach

Great spoon shovel

…the spoon shovel. Anyone know where to get one? Looked up on Amazon and looks like you can get a doppelganger, but with pre-engraved copy.

Oh! And the plate changes with each course.

Perhaps we shouldn’t have been so confident in our order when the server came back around, which side-stepped conversation with him, and we could have inquired more about menu choices.

Don’t know if I need to go back for mains, but maybe firing the whole pasta menu for another very special occasion.

Recent eats:

Khan Saab: Chicken karahi and beef kabobs were so flavorful :face_savoring_food:

Coles: as they are closing for good soon, decided to revisit the french dip one last time. Pretty decent, but nothing memorable unfortunately. Prefer Philippe the Original, Houston’s, or even Nicks on Lake :man_shrugging:t4:

Dunsmoor: the porkchop and date bread pudding :drooling_face::drooling_face:

Luv2eat Thai Bistro: jade noodles always slaps :face_savoring_food:

We went to Khan Saab Desi yesterday when bringing the family to Disney. It was popular with everyone! I think the food is good not great, but it’s still the best North Indian I’ve had in the LA area.

Thanks @cjla for sharing. I’ve been racking my brain the past two weeks trying to recall this restaurant. I have it pinned in my maps, but that was no help.

Agreed, Indian food is not the best out here in socal, but this spot reminded me a lot of the good places in the uk and motherland.

Father’s Office Arts District location announces it will be closing. Last day of service will be September 5th… (via IG)

I’d been wondering… such a large space that always seems to be empty. I hate these closures, whether it’s a second or third outlet, or the only one- it’s always sad news to me.

Back at Feld in Chicago - still think this is the best in the game and even more on top of the game than last time. Jake will see this so hi Jake sorry if I get descriptions wrong

Everything as hyper-seasonal as last time. Tomatoes, corn, melon abound.

Since I was only in town for one night I had room in my bag to bring a stash of Wong’s Valencia Pride Mangos and Andy’s Green Gage Plums for the team to try - but instead they served these to the entire restaurant in fully composed dishes. Not just fruit on ice but Green Gage Plums over fresh cheese with a frozen/shaved tomato concasse. Mangos with rice cream, mochi, buckwheat brown butter.

Other highlights
The “Drop” of tons of small dishes at the beginning of the meal. Zucchini in peach pepper/melon gazpacho (yes!) Tempura Baby Corn, various melons with various hams (one of which Jake cured himself) Delicious corn in honey butter. Ground cherries each with a different emulsion x 5

Peach in salted cream with Poblano.

Abalone, Abalone Liver Dumpling in benton’s ham dashi. The most unkosher matzoh ball soup. Incredible.

A tribute to bras’ Gargouillou with an array of the best produce that really made the midwest show off. Could’ve convinced me it was from CA.

Foie cooked whole in grape leaves with grilled grapes and a malort Canele (the only good use of Malort sorry)

Wines and Sake’s from Nathan we did by the bottle for a group of 5 and he crushed it. Amaro/Digestif selections at the end of the meal really hit too.

Highly recommend (again) to anyone passing thru Chicago. @AmaroNeverDies is hitting it soon and I look fwd to hearing the review.

Excuse the dogshit pictures, I didn’t want to delay eating anything

In season there’s great stuff from that region. It’s just the growing season is sooooo much longer in CA. Peak summer produce up there can be amazing all the way up through Ontario and Quebec.

Without a doubt!

I searched but didn’t see much.

Best kosher pizza? Catered options? I have seen a few places driving along Robertson but none of them inspire confidence

We have been promising our preschooler a pizza party all summer for meeting certain goals and he is there. He really wants to have a friend that is strictly kosher. We are going to speak with the family but I would like to offer some solutions.

Dumpling Wei in Brentwood neé Northern Cafe.

As partner said, it got a bit of glow up (decor and food-wise). Booth seating is gone, as are the hanging plants, and the lighting is, er, a bit harsh.

New people behind the counter; I have no idea if the kitchen staff has changed.

Food is not destination worthy, but I enjoyed the new dishes and think the quality and taste is a distinct improvement from Northern Cafe. Definitely a welcome upgrade. I asked the staff, and Dumpling Wei and Northern Cafe (at least the non-SGV ones) are sister restaurants.

I don’t think you should have high expectations on strict kosher. We went to the kosher Thai place once, and I hated it and my kosher relatives loved it…because how many kosher Thai places are there on earth? The pizza places you see may be all that exist in the area.

I’ve had good kosher pizza. It’s not a big challenge compared with Thai, which normally is trayf AF.

M Joy last weekend before the brief FTC update pause.

@Clayfu and @PorkyBelly are right. Boiled lamb has no business being this delicious!

Slim space with very fast service. Crazy excellent broth. Would skip the cole slaw. Not pictured: Grilled lamb ribs.

We got too full before we had the opportunity to get free rice. Which is excellent!

Nagila is probably your best bet. I ate it all the time as a kid as our family friends were strictly kosher and they were all about it. It’s nothing special.

Lelecha and Wondery Bakery. The egg tart is very tasty. Puff pastry is a different spin. Didn’t get any boba but we’ll be back.

Chicken haleem from Cloud Naan in Carson. I think this probably ranks right up there at the top for the dish in Southern California. Did a full write-up, interesting place. Kitchen is talented.
