August 2026 Rundown

Saturday lunch on the patio at Sushi Tama on Robertson. Hot day, but wanted to sit outside and the awning made the patio bearable. Not too many places, if any, on the Westside where you can get decent sushi for lunch on a Saturday (or maybe I don’t know all the secret places for weekend lunch sushi, although I used to enjoy Hide on Sawtelle back in the day). Nice jazz playing in the background.

Chirashi

Chirashi reasonably priced at $31, but not enough fish unless you are really not hungry. The ice tea was so good and refreshing!

One piece of kohada to get my Omega 3’s.

Kohada

And the part of meal I enjoyed the most – vegetable handroll. The rolls at Tama are so good because of the quality of the nori. Don’t think I have had that quality of nori outside of uber- expensive sushi restaurants. Vegetables and a nice schmear of ume shiso. Delicious!

Stopped by Lonzo’s Bread & Peruvian Eatery in Culver City yesterday for an early dinner with some family.

Tiger’s Milk ceviche was the consensus highlight of the meal.

Arroz Con Mariscos reminded us of paella, but more flavorful and with, much to my delight, a little cheese on top!

Peruvian Pesto with filet mignon. Meat was nice and tender with good flavor from the chimichurri and pesto.

Osso Buco Seco was the only “miss” of the night—it reminded us too much of galbi-jjim (not that that’s a bad thing).

Awash

Partner has always declined to eat Ethiopian food as long as I’ve known him b/c he had Ethiopian food once in San Diego and thought it was quite bad. He wasn’t sure if it was a bad rendition or if the cuisine just isn’t for him.

Neighbors wanted to have Ethiopian food recently, and, after hearing that they had Rahel’s a few days b/f, I suggested Awash (which I had only been once b/f and liked the best of all the Ethiopian places I had tried).

SUCCESS!!! Partner and neighbors loved it. The grilled chicken was a bit smoky and delightful (and the spaghetti bolonese was totally serviceable). Forgot to take a pic of the chicken awaze until it was all gone. Not sure what creamy white-ish item was on the veg combo, but I think that was my favorite on that platter.

Bonus was seeing Kyle MacLachan eating outside at the place next door (a vegan Italian place, I think).

Shiro wat?

Maybe? Shiro wat in “general” photos looks a bit darker, but I’m not sure what else it could’ve been (we didn’t get the stuffed jalapeños mentioned in the menu, so, for some reason, I thought maybe it was related to that).

It does look like shiro wat. There are two types of shiro wat. A spicy version with berbere and other spices, which has a reddish/orange-ish hue, and a milder version, which is what the above looks like.

All Roads (Brentwood)

Fantastic pinsa. Second only to Oste in my book.

They also added some lunch combos since the last time I went. Pretty good deals on there given the normal menu prices!

We also got the pollo paillard which was quite tasty. Pounded almost (but not quite) as thin and tender as my favorite pounded chicken in LA at Palmeri. The surrounding arugula was just ok.

Cozy spot for a casual but high quality meal or snack.

Tuk Tuk Thai - Taco Tuesday
cc: Anajak Thai (Sherman Oaks)?

I have spent plenty of time on Sawtelle in my life, but very little time at the northern edge, at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard. It’s a cooler, funkier little micro area than I remembered. There’s a board game shop swarmed with people, a dvd rental store (those still exist?) and an old school theater.

And then, a ton of thai establishments. Tuk Tuk Thai, Talay Thai, Emporium Thai, Ban Ban Burger, Bangkok BBQ, Cafe Franca, all within a stones throw. Has anyone ever referred to this little part of Sawtelle as Sawthai? Because if not, let’s get it going.

On to Tuk Tuk Thai. The place was packed at 8PM. No open tables inside or out, so I had to sit at a communal high-top style table. Good for them!

Tragically, they were out of draft singha.

The server mentioned that the tacos were bite sized, so I ordered all three. (In reality, they are not bite-sized. I got probably five bites out of each).

Cumin Fish Taco

The batter on the fish was a little darker and held together a tad worse than one might want, but by no means was it falling apart. The batter itself mostly faded into the background, and the fish was cooked well and perfectly mild, essentially a blank canvas for the rest of the ingredients. Mango, pickled onions, garlic (thankfully just a hint), chili, lime. There’s a lot going on here, and while it flirts with “too much” going on, it mostly works. It’s fresh, it’s bright, it’s tasty. The blue corn tortilla from Komal was served piping hot - fantastic! Oh, and it’s spicy. I’d eat this again.

Thai-Braised Beef Shank Taco

Is there a difference between the consistency and taste of blue corn vs yellow or white corn (whichever this is)? For whatever reason, this Komal taco was less soft and fluffy, a little more rigid, and it didn’t taste quite as good as the blue corn tortilla. The smokiness overpowered a bit here, the same way I feel about some mezcal. The meat itself was fine. I think it could have been braised a little bit more - it wasn’t tough, but it wasn’t completely falling apart like a good braised beef should be (in my view). I also don’t think all the ingredients and flavors were fully complementary - there was a hint of clash. This wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t on par with the fish taco. Probably wouldn’t order it again, but I would eat it if someone put it in front of me.

Thai Pork Leg Taco

Same tortilla comment as the beef taco. You can see some of the pork sticking out, and it looks fine if a little dry. And indeed, my first bite had that very impression. It was okay, but not great. However, the next bite was bad. Just a big mass of fat and gristle. I set this one down and didn’t finish it.

The server asked for my feedback at the end, and I mentioned the fatty gristle on the pork taco. She had said she had heard similar things from others, so hopefully they act on that feedback. My nose was like a leaky faucet by the end. These things are shockingly spicy, but in a slow-burn kind of way. I think the flavor profiles, aside from the smoky char of the beef taco, all kind of lean in the same direction: a lot of acidity, a lot of heat, sometimes some fruit to cut through. I wish each taco had a bit more of its own personality.

In sum: one pretty good, one mediocre, and one bad. Don’t see myself rushing back for taco tuesday. I’m probably more interested in coming back and trying the regular menu. In fact, maybe I’ll do a crawl and hit all six Thai spots in the vicinity, one dish at each.

Iki Ramen on Sunset is all-around perfection

The wonderful video rental store Cinefile is what keeps me coming back to Sawtelle on a regular basis. I really like the Nuart theater too. It was updated a few years ago and has comfy seats, a big screen, and a better beer selection than most LA bars. Getting a laab burger at Ban Ban, renting some gray-market DVDs and then seeing “The Samurai & the Prisoner” is a great north Sawtelle experience.

i had high-ish hopes - as you did for taco tuesday - but the regular menu for me hasn’t been great. nothing bad nothing great. about the same quality of most west side thai spots

these days if i want good West LA Thai, I go to Sanook Soi 38.

Have you tried Thongg Ake? I think it’s pretty good.

Really like Ban Ban, but the interior has the acoustics of a really large bathroom, so I eat outside when weather permits!

Partner also really likes Cinefile, as well (although we have only been once or twice).

Not yet. Right next to work too so I really should.

You like?

Been there twice, and I do very much like it (although I would not call it anywhere close to amazing). I don’t have the depth of knowledge of Thai as do many on the board, so take that FWIW.

While I thought Tuk Tuk was fine, I actually can’t recall the specifics of what I ate or how it tasted (other than being surprisingly spicy) across any of my visits, which is a bit odd. I’ll still prob try the Taco Tues, though.

I’ve been to Sanook twice. I liked it better than Tuk Tuk, think the flavors are sharper and more vibrant than Lala’s, but I still prefer Lala’s (and prob Thongg), for some reason (the fried fish at Lala’s really beckons me). I do think the flavors are bit more “sophisticated” at Thongg vs. Lala’s.

On a geographically related note, I had the Sichuan Fries at Jade Rabbit essentially all to myself (partner found them too oily), and I cannot do that kind of violence to my lower GI system again in the future. Y’all have been warned…

Donut King again.

Not sure if the person manning the blender makes a diff? My first and last try was a bit of a letdown. It was kind thin and didn’t have a strong coconut flavor in each sip.

Today’s was a totally diff animal. It was like the Harmless Harvest coconut smoothie but double the size for, like, $1 more. A total winner.

Also, which one of you was the person ahead of me that ordered 4 smoothies???

Finally made it into this spot and thanks for shouting it out. I will be back. Often.

I order from the chicken rice from Liu’s Cafe in Koreatown once a week or so. It’s really good. I mostly just eat the chicken to avoid carbs, but the rice is my favorite part; it’s so delicious. The chicken is great too; really moist.

Might be my first time posting here. Finally checked n/naka off my list last week! I mostly loved non-raw fish dishes which surprised myself. Memorable dishes included fried baby corn, unagi with smoked cherry (yakimono), A5 Wagyu, slightly seared belt fish, and the seaweed based broth for a vermillion rockfish course (but not the rockfish itself). My friends told me a lot of good things about the spaghetti (shiizakana) and they are exactly right—sublime. Hope to go back in winter…
