I went for the lamb at Kebab by Qazaq, but they were already out at 9:30 on a Friday night. However, this led me to get their chicken kebab. This turned out to be really rad grilled chicken wings. Surprises abound.
Finally made it to Mish Deli on La Brea. Eric Greenspan himself running around the room, touching tables (asked me how I liked my food, but my mouth was too full so I couldnât answer :)) and then working the register himself!
I had the Turkey Rachel sandwich, which is turkey on schmaltz grilled challah, âgreeny sauceâ, swiss cheese and coleslaw. Greeny sauce is horseradish and mayonnaise. I hate mayonnaise, so I asked them to go light on the sauce and it wasnât too mayonnaise-forward for my taste. Sandwich was tasty and too big for one meal, so I took half home. One nice thing is that they have to go boxes stacked on the side so you donât have to ask anyone for one.
I got a chopped salad and babka to go, so will have to update once I have tried those.
Seems like a nice addition to the neighborhood. Maybe easier to find parking either for breakfast or at night. There is a lot at the corner of La Brea and Second Street where they validate and you get a reduced fee. I parked in the lot, but the lot was beyond creepy and I wouldnât park there again. No elevators (not even sure how that is legal), so your choice is this scary locked staircase or walking up and down the narrow car ramp.
Went saturday morning at 8:30 and had a great time. Service, even for a counter spot, was VERY good. Lots of kiddies in the AM so we felt welcome with our little one.
Had blintzes (very tasty) and a breakfast plate with bagel + lox and latkes/eggs. Latkes great, bagel was a nice change from LA ones that I still love (the more dense NY style but not dry or overly chewy) and was HOT out of the oven. Free drip coffee with breakfast plates is a nice touch. Black and White cookie to go wasâŚgood not great, wouldnât get again. Date Rugelach was nice.
Menu is big - curious how many people explore the full thing and no one was ordering things from the deli case - my guess is they consolidate soon butâŚI was impressed for a first go around and look forward to trying more.
I was wondering about the Black and White cookie but I have never tasted a good one anywhere â in my mind they always look better than they taste â so I skipped it.
I always used to wonder why people seem to adore it. Gotta say the one at VBC is yummy though so if youâre looking to check a good one out in LA, please go.
Agree
I had the chopped salad and babka for dinner. The chopped salad was interesting mainly because it had big thick hunks of turkey as opposed to the luncheon meat style turkey you usually get with chopped salads. I liked it, but Iâm not sure anyone goes to a deli to order chopped salad.
HATED the babka. Had nuts in it, which in my opinion donât belong in babka, and it just tasted off in general. Kind of surprised how much I hated it.
Big fan of hungry Joeâs as well. Their jerk was awesome last time I had it
hey there are plenty of babkas with walnuts! My grandmother made it that way
Muhammara, Al Manjal, Little Arabia.
One of the best I have had in Southern California. New-ish Al Manjal (which took over the space formerly occupied by Al Wadee, a Lebanese restaurant) is a Turkish restaurant that focuses on the food of Hatay Province, in the far south of the country. If you have been to Antakya, you will remember that the food here is more like that of nearby Aleppo, Syria than faraway Istanbul. For this reason, the muhammara (called cevizli biber in Turkish) is a must order.
After two visits, I am impressed by almost everything ordered at this restaurant.
That looks awesome.
Their upside down mamba slice is so good!
Always love following your finds!
I have no personal cultural knowledge of this, but I also thought babkas could freq contains nutsâŚ
Upside down is the way to go. So Cal has not quite caught on to this but man I liked every slice of this in Philly
Thank you for reporting on this place. Definitely will be on my radar.
Hot take muhammara is better than hummus!
Unfamiliar with this place, any comments on it?
Hot take muhammara is better than hummus!

Itâs a relic of another era -a Japanese restaurant masquerading as âpan asianâ While I was there it was one person taking the orders, making and running the food. Everything made to order so not super quick or especially delicious (but perhaps if you have nostalgia for the much better Tokyo 7-7 like I do itâll help season the experience!)
Edit: to say The above is not to say I donât like it lol but if I recommend Titoâs Tacos to someone expecting El Ruso they are going to be sorely disappointed
Also I happened to be in the area stopped in at TOIRO to pick something up and remembered Chibiscus was near by & I hadnât been in a decade or so.
