It looks like I was wrong. LA Taco was teasing a guide about street kabobs in LA broadly, not the DTLA kebab alley specifically. I’m not a subscriber so can’t see the whole list, but for those who are: The 21 Best Street Kebabs in L.A. ~ L.A. TACO
Chosun Galbee - mulnaengmyeon & galbi combo
Saffy’s (no pic, but liked the lobster skewer in particular)
Rasarumah (no pic, but liked the rojak in particular)
Uovo - (no pic, but we like the value here, the very reasonable service charge + no additional tip line, and the pasta is good)
Japan
Tempura Nitome (no pics of food allowed, but next level. botanebi, shinika, awabi, and corn worth a special journey)
Kiyota Hanare - shinko from the “uncrowned emperor of sushi.” extremely good product and skill.
Sawada - no pics of food allowed, but great sawara and shin-ikura.
Kurosaki - insane aka-uni (2 months season) from Ainoshima (and later Yura and Shimonoseki)
Sushi Namba Hibiya - great iwashimaki
Tokiwazushi Shibata Honten - local Niigata nanbanebi, with rice marinated in tomato water and akazu, with shrimp miso and dehydrated shrimp shells made in to powder brushed on top in place of soy. A local and contemporary homage in the style of Tokyo Edomae institution Kizushi’s “karakoezuke” shrimp (here without the tail).
Sushi Nishioka - sagoshi (baby sawara). Almost all fish not from the market but from fisherman directly, many were morning catch.
Gaienmae Takemoto - really nice shin-ika (baby aoriika) with its explosively juicy geso.
Kizushi - an old school Edomae sushi institution. Tazunamaki - kohada layered with boiled shrimp and shrimp paste.
Sasamaki Kenuki - from 1702, the oldest continuous sushi restaurant in Tokyo. the OG tamagoyaki
Chomeiji Sakuramochi - OG sakuramochi Tokyo-style (compared to the Kansai domyoji style)
Nihonryori Yamazaki - excellent lunch deal for unagi - here, “deshiko” unagi from Lake Hamana, Shizuoka. this, liver soup, good service, and good sake for like $50 (which is a steal for eel)!
Ittaikan - tonkatsu curry for breakfast
Rokurinsha - morning tsukemen (light version) at Tokyo Station
Los Tacos Azules - super tender carnitas
Old Imperial Bar - at the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Imperial Hotel
at one point in time prob one of the best options for asian food in the area. lots of better options around these days but if your friend wants to eat at Chibiscus, you could do far worse.
Prime still hits. This one is from Valley Village
Half spicy pepperoni with added roasted mushrooms, and half Sicilian with added Italian sausage.
Off the keto? Great to see you posting again!
Ty, sir!!
I’ve been off keto forever. Ive embraced my inner and outer fat ass.
just don’t have time to eat out very often anymore.
preaching to the choir we are all fatasses on here lol
Ok but I was just in the area today and saw one across the street from Joe Peep’s and I feel like that is a little disrespectful to a valley OG
That’s the location I was at.
Last time I had Joe Peeps was like four years ago. As soon as I picked up a slice from my whole pie everything just slid right off.
Hi everyone! I’ve been lurking for a while but first time poster! I visited Jacaranda abbreviated menu this past week, as someone who never was able to enjoy Coi, and boy was i swooned. I’m ready to book the full experience, just trying to get some friends on board.
Others have shared their photos plenty, so I thought I’d share some pics from the Holbox x Corima collab I visited at the beginning of the month. Great time with some misses, both in service and execution, but that’s to be expected in collabs.
Kind of an aside, but anyone here been to Antioco Nuovo lately? I’m fiending for that goat pasta. I love goat! I also love all things seafood. I’ve only had a Real Adult Job ™️ for a couple years so I feel like I’m playing catch up to all the restaurants I’ve only been reading about. Plus I live out in Pomona so getting places is a bit of a trek for me.
welcome
Welcome to FTC!!!
Welcome!
Seafood Palace (Monterey Park). I’ve always liked this Chiu Chow restaurant. Not sure why it doesn’t get more mention.
Mamie (WeHo)
Happened to be in the city for a Henry’s Secret Ice Cream pick up, and we stopped by Mamie for a sandwich or two.
You walk in and are greeted with the smell of fresh schiacciata bread. The bread is continually baked throughout service so you are guaranteed fresh bread for your sandwich. It’s apparently the chef’s nonnna’ recipe, too.
Rimini - Porchetta, crema di gorgonzola, truffled cream, spicy roasted eggplant, baby arugula
Monaco - Italian tuna conserva (2.8oz), Calabrian spicy chili, artichoke cream, preserved lemon, roasted tomato, olive, baby arugula
The bread MADE the sandwich. The fillings were fine. I felt the tuna sandwich was carelessly made and the ingredients were just slapped on instead of being evenly spread so you get a little bit of everything with each bite. Some bites were all Calabrian chile and no tuna and some bites were all tuna and no chile. My companion loved the Rimini more. This might be a one and done for me. If I’m paying $20 for a sandwich, it’s gotta wow me like the Lorenzo at Lorenzo.
We were fortunate to get away to visit Montreal a few weeks ago. Highlight of the trip was our dinner at Garde Manger. Wonderful service, nice bar program, serious seafood platter, and classic rock playing in the background made for a grand time.
Cross post of our meal at Garde Manger.
Tunisian tuna sandwich from Kahwa Cafe was a satisfying meal on our flight home. The flat bread is baked fresh, loaded with harissa mayo, tuna salad, cucumbers, onions, and gilded with a fried egg.
My feelings about Mamie are not dissimilar. I think the cheaper sandwiches have enough price distance from Lorenzo, but, based on the quality of those cheaper ones (which is totally fine, BTW), I can’t imagine paying for the more expensive ones when Lorenzo is closer and was absolutely magical the one time I had it…
My Rundown contributions…
I go to a hair salon near Mitsuwa Santa Monica, so I will often stop in to Mitsuwa after my hair cut. The last time I got peanut (or peanut butter?) dusted mochi from there, it was DISASTROUS. They were so, SO dry. And I was really sad about that b/c I wanted to share something I really enjoyed from my childhood w/ partner.
I saw these (below) and though that, for $3, I could try again (they looked totally different):
Not a great pic, I know. Does anyone read Japanese (I don’t)? Do these say that they are fllled w/ green tea? I bit into one and, while the peanut flavor and texture were just right, I didn’t realize they were filled! It wasn’t unpleasant, but it was a bit of a surprise (esp sine I don’t know if the astringency of green tea flavoring goes that well w/ the mochi + peanut powder). I still enjoyed them overall, though (as did partner).
Musubi from Sunny Blue. Did they used to have spam musubi? If they did, they don’t have it on the menu anymore.
These were still very tasty and satisfying. We didn’t read the unpacking directions until the second set of musubi (oops)
I’m pretty sure that company (Tokachi Seika) doesn’t make a peanut or peanut butter mochi. It’s very likely kinako powder - roasted soybean powder, which yes tends to be dry and does taste nutty.
Looks like Mitsuwa was having a Hokkaido fair, so perhaps they had a special edition. Through the Mitsuwa “paid” sticker, though, I can make out that it says kinako mochi (“きな粉もち”).
Looks like the same as this one, which is filled with kuromitsu (black sugar syrup). The pairing kinako powder + kuromitsu syrup is a very traditional and commonplace now with Japanese desserts, most classically seen in warabi mochi. But here instead of the black sugar syrup being poured on top, it appears that it was the filling. So if you were expecting peanut + green tea, it might’ve been a surprise:
I love peanut mochi’s too. If you happen to be in the area pop into Nijiya. (I don’t think you have a Tokyo Central on the Westside). They have mochi’s from local places like Fugetsu-do and Chikara. I seen both peanut filled and peanut dusted. Edit: I think the dusted is kinako powder. I seen peanut filled with a pink outer
Are you nostalgic for the fresh Taiwanese-Hakka style? Corner Beef Noodle House in El Monte and Joy in Highland Park has them. I much prefer this.
I hate those triangle packaging too haha
