BAGELS.... and more bagels

there’s no wrong answer…just different preferences. I love nova and prefer it. love the touch of complex cold smoke on the cured salmon. gravlax just doesn’t have the complexity for me. both nova and gravlax can be overly salty if it’s not cured right.

Not what I’m looking for but I do love that too. Gravlax as well. Salt bagel for me is perfect.

I just miss belly lox.

Funny - I go to Utopia a lot. Wasn’t particularly impressed. I like H&H on the UES a lot more. I’ll have to try Bagel Oasis though!

Stopped by Boil & Bake in Costa Mesa this weekend for naturally leavened, wood fired bagels and house cured fish. Not a traditional NY-style bagel, but pretty delicious. Complete with a beer & wine license, they offer up a nicely curated line-up of beer, seltzer and wine. As a matter of fact they had my favorite Ruge Prosecco which I can’t find anywhere outside of NY right now. It’s worth a stop if you’re in the area for breakfast or lunch.

Bang bang is Mario’s Butcher Shop a mile away with a very respectable pastrami sandwich (recommend the double) made from Mishima Reserve.

Been really digging Maury’s lately. I would pick it over Courage line-aside, though I enjoy Courage too. Maury’s bagel has more of a NYC bagel texture, and the cream cheese is less tangy. I like the kippered salmon best.

The issue with Maury’s is that they run out of the kind you want before you can drive over there.

Nova is smoked salmon, what’s often sold as “lox” at places that don’t have old-fashioned belly lox (very salty and not smoked).

Anybody been eating bagels at Saint Raf inside 1802 roasters? I like them more than Belle’s and Bagel and Slice.

I like Saint Raf a lot! I’d put them on the same tier as Maury’s, maybe a notch behind Hank’s. And agreed that I think they’re better than Belle’s and B+S.

(Too bad the coffee at 1802 isn’t my favorite. But I guess now the move is to walk across the street to Loquat)

Lol the coffee at 1802 is so mediocre! And the coffee at Loquat is sensational but for me Loquat has one of the worst vibes of any shop anywhere? I don’t know why–regardless I still go there sometimes with bagels in hand.

Sounds like I need to try Hank’s!

Totally agreed, super uncomfortable in there. Can’t quite figure out why except that it’s like weirdly serious and quiet but not in a cool way? I’ll sit outside occasionally but it’s almost always grab coffee and run for me.

(And speaking of Saint Raf… Saint-Raf Bagels & Bread on Instagram: "A sneak peak of the Pasadena bakery; some bar seating in the front with mostly outdoor seating. The plan is to maximize the space for a bakery to accommodate the different breads we want to bake, as well as serve Detroit style sourdough pizzas at night. In the meantime, visit us in Cypress Park inside @1802roasters ✌️")

Happy to see Saint Raf getting some love on here! My favorite bagel in the city. So good I almost prefer plain to everything.

Thanks for the tips. The Saint Raf’s bagel / bagel sandwich is the best I’ve had in LA. Agree that the Loquat coffee is better than the 1802 coffee.

Any thoughts on Belle’s Bagels and Bagel + Slice?

Bagels+Slice is Meh. For both the Bagels and the Slices.

If in the area, St. Rafs over both of them.

Thanks to everyone who mention saint rafs. Tried them yesterday and indeed they are tasty. Really enjoyed the texture and crust. I bought only the bagels and made my own cured and smoked salmon

Belles is my go to in the area but St rafs is better.
