I hope you’re right. I really wish they’d rise to the level that I was personally expecting of them. Almost all of the OG locals hate them for being part of the new wave of hipster joints on the street. So local patronage is questionable. The folks working on and around the area seem pretty luke warm about Blue Star now that the novelty is wearing off. Parking is always bad and random at best. Their overhead has to be huge. So many businesses on this street are in the same boat but many have deep pockets behind them and the stores themselves are viewed more as marketing spaces to promote the brands. I don’t think Blue Star is here with the same kind of capital backing and goals in mind.
A non-glazed, traditional buttermilk cake donut is a great vessel for a breakfast sandwich of fried egg, Canadian bacon, and some Sriracha and honey to make it go down easy.
those are the only donuts that I’ll eat— maybe a little powdered sugar or cinnamon. (great vessel not withstanding—never tried it w/ a fried egg, but that does sound promising).
edit—just noticed the addition of canadian bacon for the win.
Now that I think about it, fried bologna would be pretty awesome.
A nice thick slice of bologna fried to the point of forming a crispy outer layer, with a nice warm creamy middle, using nothing but the best bacon grease.
The same thing has happened to me the last few times I’ve been to Sidecar. I think they have been unable to keep up with demand over the past ~9-12 months. When I first started going there 2 years ago the donuts were always fantastic. Well fried, light, fluffy and some of the best I’ve had.
On my recent trips the donuts have been heavy and very oily. The lines have been considerably longer and our favorite donuts have been going downhill. We had to throw away the salted butter donut on several occasions because it was like a ton of bricks and greasy. My favorite donut is the huckleberry and its been hit or miss the past few trips.
Finally tried Blue Star today. It’s less than a mile from my house and I go past it at least once a day, but I wasn’t willing to stand in line for $4 donuts. At 8:30 this morning there was a steady stream of customers but no line outside.
The donuts all looked absolutely beautiful, but I limited myself to two as I was unlikely to finish even one this morning and I doubt they’ll last long. But I wanted to sample them before investing $50+ to bring a dozen to the office.
I chose a hazelnut chocolate ganache because the ganache looked so good, and a lemon poppyseed buttermilk because buttermilk cake donuts are generally my favorites (Primo’s buttermilk bar is my all-time favorite, followed closely by the ones at Schatz’s bakery in Mammoth Lakes). But in this case I preferred the hazelnut chocolate. Fluffy raised donut and deeply chocolatey not very sweet ganache. The lemon poppyseed buttermilk had good lemon flavor and an excellent crust but as others have noted it also managed to be excessively oily.
Still glad that I finally got there and I will be back to try more flavors.
@bulavinaka my dulce de leche donut I had yest was absolutely horrible. It was exactly as you described, an oily mess and nothing like the first time I had it. Damn shame.
