Chandavkl commemorates the 50th anniversary of authentic Chinese food in the SGV

They’re not and I’m not; if I want to make an ad hominem, it will be direct. Pomona and Claremont are geographically in the Pomona Valley.

I think a lot of people (and Wikipedia) loosely define the SGV as including Pomona Valley, which may be wrong geographically but accurate as far as “where you find the good Chinese restaurants.” It’s like calling Walnut Creek part of the East Bay even though it’s on the other side of the hills from the SF Bay watershed.

They are not in the SGV, no matter what some rando who edited Wikipedia thinks. Do they consider themselves SGV? Most probably do not. Those that do, they would be wrong  Reeks of basic ignorance or revisionism.

Concur with you on Diamond Bar, it’s in the hills past the Puente Valley.

Problem is, there isn’t that much in the way of “good” Chinese restaurants in Claremont, Pomona and the Pomona Valley. Rancho Cucamonga, further out, has some Chinese restaurants around a 99 Ranch.

I lived in Walnut Creek. Technically, it and Concord and Pleasant Hill would be the Diablo Valley, but I get “Greater East Bay Area” too, much like “Greater Los Angeles” can cover a lot of ground.

How about Cal Poly Pomona’s verification:

D’oh! All on me. Posting when tired, I left out the important part “They are not in the SGV, no matter what some rando who edited Wikipedia thinks.” Sorry about that. I’ve since corrected my original. Yes, Cal Poly is absolutely right, they are in the Pomona Valley. So much, again, for those who think otherwise.

For what it’s worth, a defining factor in locating valleys is usually determined by where the water drains. As I recall, the water from the mountains on down through the Pomona Valley drains into the Santa Ana River instead of the San Gabriel River.

I remember from my youth references being made to the “Pomona-Walnut Valley”. That seems to have gone out the window and I think that Walnut is now clearly SGV. I see a parallel to JThur01’s pet community of Otterbein which I think might now be described as East Rowland Heights, and pretty much obliterated from most people’s consciousness. If that can happen to Otterbein and dozens of other communities in Metro LA, why not the Pomona-Walnut Valley?

I do love me some Otterbein :slightly_smiling_face: As you point out, many places have disappeared from local maps, usually through name changes or being overrun/incorporated into other cities, but the Pomona Valley-SGV “confusion” is down to folks not being knowledgeable of, or familiar with, local history. Rage, rage against those embers dying :slightly_smiling_face: Otterbein’s disappearance was an evolution of development, whereas the “Pomona and Claremont are in the SGV” was created out of whole cloth by people who don’t know what they write/speak of (in other words, Wikipedia!) :slightly_smiling_face:

That was a fun read, as a first hand observer of the growth of Chinese restaurants, businesses, and families in the SGV. Thanks for the share. Thanks for @chandavkl for doing what you do.
