I went to that Chartreuse shop in Paris in December. Can confirm it is worth checking out if you appreciate Chartreuse. They also have guided tastings and a bar. At least when I went, many of the tastings sold out well in advance, so I’d recommend booking ahead of time.

where are folks getting their (not exorbitantly priced) chartreuse by the bottle these days? i stocked up when i read the news about the monks doing more praying and less distilling (which turned out to be kinda misleading?) – now I never see a 750mL bottle for less than $100.

I have gotten mine from Kato when they’ve had their Sunday wine sales, although I did not see any bottles last time. Price was $75 IIRC. Saw something on instagram from their brand specialist in LA saying that there’s not really a shortage of Chartreuse. It’s just that during the pandemic they sold more to retailers, but post-pandemic they have reverted to primarily selling to bars/restaurants through distributors as they did pre-pandemic. However, the perceived scarcity/increased popularity of Chartreuse now leads to people hording it.
Otherwise… that Chartreuse store in Paris is a very reliable source. 
The often have VEP as well from what the staff told us.

It seems clear to me that demand for Chartreuse has increased, since I see it more places and featured more prominently, and the monks said they were not planning to produce more to meet the increased demand.

If you’re anywhere near Grenoble check out the Chartreuse HQ in Voiron. Some of the rarer bottlings are available for purchase. Plus an extensive library at the tasting bar.

I was thinking about the monastery though, which is near Voiron (which is itself out of the way). Are you going there? I wanted to make a pilgrimage but it was that or Troisgrois, and we chose Troisgrois. I regret it and would choose Chartreuse monastery, Voiron, and Grenoble if I had a do over.
To bring this back to Petit Trois - I just booked it for dinner! Specifically because I’m craving Chartreuse. It will cure all my ailments, physical and mental.

The caves in Voiron have been designed to accommodate visitors. The tour is quite interesting but you won’t see any monks there. They conduct their work in secret at the monastery. Pretty sure it’s off limits to tourists.

There is a museum near the monastery that people can visit. From there, I believe you can hike to (but not enter) the monastery itself.
