Fascinating location too. About a fifteen minute walk from the hip part of York in HLP, but it seems like they are banking on this being a destination spot of sorts. Wonder what parking is like.

Really curious too. Kogi truck parked there regularly and had long lines. Lots of traffic and decent residential nearby. Maybe a little out of the average price range for Oxy students though…

Cojones of steel on anyone willing to open a new restaurant in a time like this. If their food is good, then I wish them ridiculous success.

Eagle Rock is kind of a tough neighborhood too and that stretch is so dead, it will def have to be a destination restaurant.

Love all the vegan options; thinking @hanhgry and spouse should do a OOE (at least the veg) report.

Haha thanks for the tag! I’m excited to try this, and the graphic designer in me is loving the look of this restaurant (even though we won’t be dining in any time soon). I’ll see if I can convince the husband to do a veg OOE!

is it me or is it weird they don’t have any pictures of their food on their ig? yelp reviews are all over the place, “bland”, “packed tons of flavor”, “flavorless”, “flavorful”, “too salty”, “more salt”, “small portions”, “overpriced”, “incredibly rude”, “nice and friendly”. I’m going to hold off for now.

lots of press focusing on the style

Chifa definitely looks like a restaurant opened by a designer

So am I going there to eat or get fitted for a hipster fashion show?

Anybody try it yet?

Warrior: Chifa is a pretty good neighborhood restaurant. They serve flavorful dishes that excite the palate with lots of white pepper, Sichuan pepper, and chiles. I don’t understand how Yelpers could find this food bland. Compared to what, Sichuan? I thought the best dishes tonight were the prawns and the sautéed cauliflower, both of which were quite good. More ordinary dishes were the tiradito, the fries, and the mapo tofu. I thought the soy sauce (si yao) chicken was chewy and clearly inferior to Pearl River Deli’s rendition. (I prefer PRD’s mapo tofu too, though that is a closer call.) I found the pandan tofu pudding with ginger syrup unpleasantly medicinal. Overall, I wouldn’t make a point of going back, but it is a good option in the area.

Peony: I was very excited to try Chinese-Peruvian food. My overall impression is the majority of the dishes taste like a spicier version of Cantonese food. I tasted white pepper in almost all the dishes. The dishes were well-made, and the restaurant seemed very popular. I feel I would return to this restaurant if it were in my neighborhood, but since I’m actually closer to the SGV, I may not travel all the way to Eagle Rock just for this food.
