Coffee beans worth a drive

We just got our first 5lb bag from them. No longer living near them to get multiple small bags frequently at cheap price has been tough.

Ended up doing Tectonic since partner is particular about dark roast. He loves it. Said that I should mention that he grinds it very fine and uses it in an espresso machine, in case that’s important info for people reading the thread.

Pretty sure that’s what they are using at Parts and labor the balconi pop up. I like it, it’s not too dark

what you using for a grinder? ours is dull and definitely wasn’t fine enough to begin with… Capresso

Tectonic is great.

It’s def OXO. Partner says it’s the “conical burr grinder.” If that isn’t enough info, I can try to find the model # (I don’t drink coffee, so I don’t know much about the equipment).

Cosign. Someone got them for me as a gift last year and they were some of my favorite in the aeropress.

we bought that for 10 years straight… but a year or 2 ago they scaled up so much that their roasting date suddenly became many months away and not within 2 weeks… i likem how i likem

Since you and Bruins endorsed we’ll have to try again. We tried the MT beans when they first started roasting ~2-3 year ago when we were down in SD. I didn’t really like them at the time.

Great news for Fans of City Bean and the Jefferson Park Area! City Bean is opening up a retail store front! Looking forward to paying a visit as it’s super close to the La Brea E Line station!

I was on a Colombian bean kick for a while (Boy & Bear, Devocion). I love those chocolatey notes with dark cherry finish.

But recently my eyes have been opened to some really great Brazilian coffees.
Aquarela by SPLA has been importing and contract roasting some realllly interesting coffees.
Natural process, honey process, fermented, etc. The result is a beautiful diversity in flavors, aromas, and mouthfeel.

Recently, I especially loved their Cunha coffee (below, right). This anaerobic fermented coffee had the most in-your-face fruit-forward aroma of any coffee I have ever tasted. It was like fermented peach and berries. But unlike Ethiopian blueberry bombs which have a very light, almost tea-like mouthfeel, these Cunha beans had a medium mouthfeel and shined under multiple brew methods (I tried v60, Chemex, Moka pot, and Aeropress).

On top of wonderful take-home beans, their co-owner and main barista Alex pulls great espresso and makes excellent milk drinks too. Alex just got back from a trip to Brazil to meet with their producers and build new direct relationships.

This is a delightful independent coffee shop that is owned by passionate and friendly people.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Cunha sounds right up my alley.

Before posting, I searched for SPLA and saw that you had mentioned them in your Chinatown post. If you haven’t been in a while, I think they had an ownership and vision restructuring and the result has been better coffee. I definitely recommend checking them out again. I think they still have Cunha on-site if you ask, but I didn’t see any bags for purchase out today.

Yeah they’ve at the very least had an extensive rebrand. I went a while ago also and thought it was good but unremarkable, but this looks like a very different, more exciting operation. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks so much for posting! I’ve been on an extended mourning since Cafe Ingacious closed… After being a guinea pig for a home roasting neighbor (meh) I’ve been pretty happy with Cafecita beans I get from Highly Likely… Looking forward to trying these guys though because the fermented beans have certainly piqued my interest after seeing a youtube video about it…
