Popeye’s red beans & rice topped w/crispy fried chicken skin. The rest of the chicken in a biscuit with hot sauce & honey.
Ditto on the sushi too, including Sugarfish. Nobody asks me what I feel like eating unless they’re in the mood for sushi because that is always my answer.
Okay, this is way, WAY high-end for comfort food, and will unfortunately probably never be repeated, but our most comforting meals during the darkest days of the pandemic were Hayato’s cook-at-home nabe dinners. The relaxed pacing, the serenity, the purity of the ingredients, and that amazing dashi–it was a calming, zen comfort rather than a stuff-your-face, food coma comfort (which, at my age, is more aversive than comforting). I guess lighter Japanese food in general would be my go-to in difficult times.
When I need comforting, three places that always make me feel better are:
Musso & Frank for a filet mignon with Béarnaise and a Roquefort salad
Taix for roast chicken or steak frites
Taihei in MPK for Japanese sushi, teriyaki, and clam miso
Highlight of the pandemic for me. Fantastic taste and attention to details. And we got that cool butane stove that we have used a few times since.
I’ve been trying and failing to come up with an answer for this one. All I can figure is that cooking and eating temporarily override whatever depression or frustration or whatever I have in the rest of my life. I can’t recall being unhappy during a meal except when I’ve cooked a lousy dish.
