Covid-19: Ideas and Strategies for Shopping and Cooking

Obviously in Reno, we don’t have a “fishing port.” Boohoo. But I can get ridiculously great meat!

One goofy side effect of doing all my shopping online is ending up with double and triple orders since I’m not sure what will arrive when, or at all, or I need to order some amount to get free shipping.

We got a 25-lb. bag of AP flour, then a five-pound bag, then a 2.5-lib. bag. Which is OK since I’m baking four or five days a week.

I’ve got three cases of cat food on the way since it was totally unclear whether it would get here before we ran out and the “track shipment” tools were all broken. Just opened the last can a few minutes before I got a UPS notification that one case will arrive today. I love the cat but would prefer not risk my life to feed her.

I have the incredible good fortune to live in a wonderful neighborhood. We have all been very strict about masks and 6’ distancing, and only going out when you have too, but we still have interaction which includes cooking for one another. We bring our own containers to whoever is cooking that night, leave them on the porch, and then pick them up when notified. Good time to walk the dog as well. Tonight I did pulled pork sandwiches, mac-and-cheese, and coleslaw for three households. My neighbor baked chocolate raspberry cake.

We had a ZOOM meeting the other night, as we are all worried about supply chain breakdowns. It turns out all of us have been preparing for that eventuality (hope it never happens), and we shared inventories with one another.
Its great to have such people around at a time like this, and I hope others here are as lucky.

All good perspectives. Living in Reno we have lots of local farmers and ranchers. We’ll be utilizing them even more.
