Damian - DTLA

Thanks for the Ditroit reference. I hadn’t heard of it, but we’ll check it out.

I like the fish flauta, seasonal tamal, suadero taco and churros there. But you’ll prob spend $80 for lunch(*for two), and if you have moral qualms about a $7 taco it’ll prob annoy.

Damian doesn’t get that much love on the board but I had an excellent meal with my dad there. We actually came after attempting Holbox, the line on Friday evening was pretty outrageous. Had an excellent meal with highlights being the carrot aguachile, seasonal tluayuda with squash and squash blossoms, and the artichoke huarache. A lot of restraint on the vegetable dishes that really allowed the flavor and texture to come through on each one. Their tortillas are also next level much better than komal. Chile morita salsa I could eat by the jar.

Also service was impeccable constant pouring of the water, clearing/cleaning of the table and changing of silverware and plates. These servers were definitely trained somewhere else. Additionally the host personally emailed me the next day to follow up on our meal and told me I could always book directly with her. That’s a level of service rarely seen in LA. Impressionist pic of guac due to lighting lol

Olvera tells me that in honor of the 25th anniversary of Pujol, he will be bringing the restaurant to LA for a 10-day pop-up event in April. “A lot of the customers that we have in Mexico City are from Los Angeles,” he says, “so we believe that it’s a market that knows the Pujol name well.” He will be bringing back Pujol classics, and teases me with a handful of dishes he plans to highlight on the exclusive menu. “We used to make thinly sliced avocado in a ravioli style with shrimp tartar that will probably be there. Back in the day, we used to do a squash blossom soup–with cream that we melted with coconut. And a fish al pastor and the mole de olla that were also emblematic during the first decade of Pujol.” The tasting menu of about seven courses will be available for about 200 covers, split between an early evening and late evening service, for each of the ten nights.

Opentable and Resy show nothing available April 22-30 at Damian. Both platforms show availability before and after. I hope it’s just that they haven’t released ressies on those dates.

Goes up at noon per the timeout article they posted!

I got the saturday night early seating pretty easily and I was a minute late to the game

I didn’t even know about this until I got an email from Damian at 12:05, clicked the link, made a reservation. This was not attacked by bots that’s a completely false characterization. If it was attacked by bots nobody on here would have gotten a reservation, let alone me 5 minutes after they went up.

AB-1245 California Restaurant Reservation AntiPiracy Act is on my mind.

Sure, but:

(1) Reservations were still available 5 minutes after they went live. A bot would gobble up all the reservations in quite literally milliseconds.

(2) If the reservations were gobbled up by bots to resell, then they would have to be posted for resale somewhere. I see 0 reservations for sale on AT (the largest reservation resale platform).

I was on at 12:04 and there were no reservations on the three days I checked fwiw.

Not a big deal though.

Was on 12:02. Resy was sold out. OT was greyed out.

When I went on at 12:05, the weekend days were fully sold out. The weekdays were sold out of 2 tops but still had availability for 4 tops. I am certain of this because I literally tried every quantity combination for every day. I even hesitated for a minute or two before booking, as I didn’t really want a 4 top at 5pm on a weeknight, but I decided it was better than nothing. Resy DOES NOT hold the reservation while it’s in your “cart” (unlike OpenTable, which does), therefore it is plainly factual that it was not sold out prior to 12:05 (when I booked), at the earliest. Certain configurations on certain days, sure, but the whole thing, irrefutably no.

Is anyone going before Saturday that is willing to send me the menu? Deciding if the meal is going to work for my pregnant wife (who is eating most things but just in case) or if I need to bring a pal
