General Brentwood thread

It’s worth checking out. I’ve bought plenty from them online over the years as they carry my favorite producer, but I admittedly don’t know shit about wine. I’ve felt very welcome and taken care of the few times I’ve been in and I can’t do much more than tell them which bottles I like and what I think I’m looking for. They usually have some good tunes playing and are happy to share a sip if they have anything open.

they’re welcoming and chill. there’s some good variety at multiple price points, lots of values to be had across the board, not just trophy bottles. champagne, riesling, italian reds, loire, etc. there’s a bunch to discover. one thing i like is that the producers are strong across the board - no filler labels (the kind of “buy this to get that”) that you’d run into at bigger wine shops. of course you can go crazy with high-end allocated bottles there, but i’m more excited about finding good values for regular drinkable stuff. not affiliated at all just a happy customer.

There were people eating a Doner Corner tonight. Busy work week coming up, but will try to get there some time soon…

Doner Corner wasn’t open when I drove by on Saturday. Maybe it was just a soft open for friends/family the other night?

Signage for Black Sugar Boba next door has gone up.

I’ve been a little under the weather and picked up some food from Doner Corner. Not going to pretend to be an expert but the food was tasty and the space is nice. Definitely looking forward to checking out more of the menu. I’m rooting for them to do well.

btw: while I was there I saw someone eating what must have been the Doner sandwich, looked really good

I am also under the weather and your post inspired me to pick up from Doner Corner!

I asked the lady on the phone what she recommended, and her top pick was the Doner Iskender, which I had never heard of. It’s doner meat slathered in a tangy tomato sauce over grilled (maybe lightly fried?) puffy pita chunks - kind of like giant pita croutons - with tomatoes, peppers and a side of yogurt. Good flavor and just the right amount of sauce (i’m a stickler for over-saucing). It was really tasty!

We also got the Spinach & Feta Pide, which is kind of like a Turkish flatbread pizza with a flaky crust - think spanikopita but not quite that flaky. The dish was baked perfectly with just a hint of char. The flavors were also good, if a little understated - could have used a little more punch. Even though it’s bread based, the dish felt quite light.

Not pictured - hummus. Solid flavor and texture, a tad towards the grittier end of texture but not overly so.

It’s Brentwood, so I would say prices were in line with what I expected - $17-25 for entrees, most of which come with accoutrements.

Two entrees and a side of hummus was enough food for the two of us, though I am sure some on here would disagree

The place was half full on a Wednesday night at 7PM - about as full as I would ever expect it to be at such a time. From the sound of it, every table was speaking Turkish.

I hope they can make it, as it’s a tricky location. Will definitely be back, great addition to the neighborhood!

I enjoyed my doner wrap at lunch last week.

Served with a side of really terrible fries.- limp and greasy. Told the owner/manager dude sitting in front of a laptop how much I liked the wrap and hated the fries. He said “I know about the fries and am working on it”

Mine were good, but I went for dinner. Wonder if Sergio mainly cooks at night I am under the impression that the owner doesn’t do the cooking, but I have no idea why I have that thought).

New York Bagel Co on San Vicente closed about a month ago according to the parking attendant. Was it the best deli? No. Was it a great deli? Also no. But it was a nice place to grab a low stakes brunch on the weekend and I’m very sad to lose it.

Also - San Vicente is popping tonight. Every restaurant packed to the gills.

Big news at Brentwood Gardens. Both the very briefly vacant CPK space, and the longer vacant and historically slightly cursed space right above CPK (most recently GuYi), have been leased. One will be lunch brunch focused Mediterranean food, the other will be Persian food, both of which are big gaps in the Brentwood restaurant scene!

I could def use something other than Pita Grill and Soom Soom…

Staying west of the 405, I think Darya and Javan are quite respectable, but it’s been awhile since I’ve visited either.

Black Sugar Boba (next to Doner Corner) appears to be open.

Flour Pizzeria on San Vicente targeting a soft open this weekend, pending one final permit. New York style pizza by the slice (or pie), as well as a small menu of sandwiches and salads. This was supposed to be their second location…but the original location in the Palisades burned down in the fire. It sounds like pretty much the whole team from the Palisades is moving over to the Brentwood location.

I had never tried the Palisades location, but it has tremendous reviews online, so I’m quite excited for this.

Sure there’s plenty of pizza on San Vicente already (Toscana, Sor Tino, Palmeri, Ospi, Pizzana, Jon & Vinny’s), but none of those are New York style nor do they sell by the slice.

Flour Pizzeria is open! Yesterday was free whole pies for Palisades residents and first responders as @yogachik said, while today is free slices for everyone (one per person)! No sandwiches and a smaller selection of pizzas today, full menu tomorrow.

Free slice options are:
Cheese
Pepperoni
Margherita
House (Margherita topped with burrata and hot honey)

The missus and I got a slice of pepperoni and a slice of house. Both were great. New York style is the closest analogue, though it definitely has its own spin. The slices are a little thinner and crispier (but not overly crispy - it’s not New Haven by any means) than a typical NY slice, and while there’s plenty of sauce and cheese it’s not oozing off the slice. The pizza holds its shape well - it does not need to be folded or eaten with a fork/knife. It seems less greasy than the average NY slice. I would say it’s on par or a hair above Joe’s SM or Vito’s SM, but in my humble view the original Vito’s and Mullberry may be a hair above.

Great addition to the neighborhood!

Great White opening directly behind (attached to, really) AOC. Apologies for the horrific photo, I took it from a moving car.
