I miss Bandera so much, would love a new iteration of it.
Bad news:
There is no Hillstone restaurant opening in Brentwood. My grandfather was either given bad information or he misunderstood what he was told.
Good news:
I can officially scoop that there is a Layla Bagels going in on Barrington just south of San Vicente! No longer must we suffer eating those flavorless “bagels” from Pop’s!
Had a nice dinner at Donner Corner with my mom, It was fairly busy for a Monday. Tried the baklava with pistachio’s and have to say it was pretty good, now I’m curious how the other desserts are. They had some sort of baked custard like thing on the counter that looked good.
AOC Brentwood closing August 1. The now too familiar story - covid, strikes, fires, labor costs, bureaucracy. Beverly location will remain open.
Oh, that’s too bad. We had a group dinner there (yet another work dinner!) 2 mos ago, and it was a really lovely experience.
It seems to be mostly busy everytime i walk by. That’s too bad. I admit i rarely go there, it feels cramped and loud but the food is always good
I have to say I’m not entirely surprised. Some of the food was good, but not at the level to make it successful enough in my opinion, considering the size of the space. The public voted with their feet on any day except Friday or Saturday, it was generally easy to get in. It was in our rotation, but I think we went to maybe once in three or four months if we couldn’t get in to somewhere better.
I still miss Tavern. Never liked AOC’s menu - and I never went back after having a terrible reaction to my meal a few years ago.
Flour Pizza.
Yay or nay
If you’ve been to NYC in the last 30 days, nay
Otherwise, yay
Nay.
Amici Brentwood - still average at best, but soon with a full liquor license and renovated interior!
Not sure if this counts as Brentwood, but the storefront of Agora World Market looks to be getting a massive makeover. Does anyone know if Agora will return?
I’ve heard that it will not from my mom who lives just across the way on Amherst but don’t know for sure
I was hungry on the early side tonight, so I searched “happy hour Brentwood”. Lo and behold, it surfaced a post from Bar Toscana from FIVE MINUTES prior about a new aperitivo hour (happy hour) that they are launching TODAY. Man, those algorithms are good!
No menu online so I’ll post it here:
Arancini cones - perfectly cheesy, nice fry/breading, with just a background note of saffron (but not an overwhelming amount of saffron flavor like Forma’s arancini). Served on a layer of well seasoned tomato sauce and peas.
Crostini trio - produce tasted fresh and flavorful, bread could have used a bit more flavor
Peachy keen - good fruit flavor without being overly sweet
Very enjoyable meal at reasonable-for-Brentwood prices. Perhaps most exciting, the smaller happy hour portions make this an ideal spot for solo diners.
Very good pricing! thanks for the heads up
For the Win coming to both Brentwood and Westwood:
Former Agora location has a large and very fancy chandelier prominently placed in the corner window + long curtains elsewhere. Wonder what’s coming in…
Edit: never mind, found it. 2 Turkish restaurants w/i, what, a half mile of each other? Wonder about the baked goods…
Had my first Doner Corner experience today and it was good! Falafel was fresh but doner definitely the star. Also thought the baba ghanoush was really good.
I liked it, reminded me of being back in brooklyn, worth a try ![]()
Northern Cafe in Brentwood get a “Grand Opening” (or was it “Re-Opening?”) sign and a new name: Dumpling Wei.
Seems like Dumpling Wei is part of Northern Cafe (per @chandavkl’s IG post from last yr): David R. Chan on Instagram: "Northern Cafe has spread into multiple branding, with not only Dumpling Wei for dumplings. This former Northern Cafe in Westwood Village is now called Happy Panda Kitchen serving primarily hotpot, though also a few other dishes like this popcorn chicken. As with the Dumpling Wei website, the Happy Panda Kitchen website also retains a Northern Cafe web address. This split branding actually makes sense as Northern Cafe has so many branches, and the menus are not completely the same. This is best demonstrated in Westwood Village with three Northern Cafe branches all having varying menus."
I haven’t stopped by yet, so I have no idea if the menu is the same.
