Great Chinese Food In Irwindale

On the predecessor board I once facetiously posted that there were multiple teams of chowhounds criss-crossing the San Gabriel Valley to be the first to find the latest great Chinese restaurant opening. Well, fellows and gals, we missed one, because Sands Chinese Restaurant, which opened two years ago in Irwindale, is really a gem, one which I’ve never heard anybody mention until I stumbled onto a posting that one of the operators had made on a Facebook group.

Perhaps first order is to explain the name of the restaurant, since there’s nothing Chinese about “Sands.” From what I can tell, the chef here used to work at the Sands Casino in Macao, which would explain the one of the stunning Yelp reviews that claimed Sands was the best Chinese restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley, which I assumed came from a relative or friend of the owner. It would also explain the quality of the food here and some of the less common, upscale dishes that they serve here. Unfortunately, most of those dishes are advance order only so I didn’t get a chance to try this time. Also we were hampered by the fact that one of our group is midway in the tooth implant process and we had to limit ourselves to soft dishes. Nevertheless this was enough to give an idea of the quality of the restaurant.

One other unfortunate thing about ordering only soft foods was that none of the dishes were particularly photogenic. But the food was excellent across the board.

This is the crystal noodle with egg whites.

Continuing the egg white theme, Shanghai egg whites with broccoli. Fantastic dish, even better than the egg white dish at the old Embassy Kitchen in San Gabriel.

Sweet and sour fish, nice and thinly crunchy and tasty.

Singapore curry chow fun, spicier than usual but very well done.

The special advance order menu is something we don’t see very often in Southern California Cantonese restaurants. Items on the Sands Menu include mixed meat and vegetables in egg white pancake, pipa tofu, braised stuffed duck, braised pork belly, sweet and sour fish with pine nuts, and chicken wings with glutenous rice. I actually didn’t see the prices of these, except the pipa tofu at $38. A couple other nice dishes on the regular, fairly short menu were the thousand layer tofu and the rack of lamb.

Sands Chinese Restaurant is closed on Sundays.

Wow these dishes look great!

Truly agree with @chandavkl that this is a gem. I don’t think I’ve had such a positive impression towards a Chinese restaurant (or any restaurant) in quite a while. Re special advance order menu, some of these require more than a day’s advance notice.

I enjoyed their Combo B last month: https://www.instagram.com/p/CYATTRDPAz7/

We have been there a couple of times before. Always look for the right opportunity to feast out on their private menu. CNY and a nudge from a reliable source finally made us to go for a special meal.

Eight Treasure Duck is a gem, perfect for winter. Pipa Tofu is very light and not greasy at all. Green beans with fermanted oliver is a well excuted family dish. Typhoon Shelter Lamb Chop is a crowd pleaser. Stuffed Chicken Wings, skin is cracklin crisp and tasty. Almond Milk for dessert. They use north south almond and egg white as calle for in traditional Cantonese recipe.

For soup we had Wu Zhi Mao Tao [Ficus Hirta] / Blaze [Agaricus] Mushroom / Chicken Soup. Uniquely complex flavor and very healthy to boot. A must if you are into Cantonese soup.

This is a family run restaurant. Even with three large tables all ordered special items, service never faltered. The dishes came out at a nice pace. And the sequencing is logically.

This is one of our favorite Chinese restaurants in SoCal. The hours are challenging for anyone coming from the Westside, so we take out, even the special dishes (I bring my own platters and he plates them for me). It’s a husband and wife with their college-aged daughter and a son in high school.

He used to cook at the Sands Macau (hence the name). He’s the real deal. Don’t let the sign on the window for Teriyaki Chicken fool you :joy:
