Nice! My husband lived in Whittier for many years. Dal Rae will always be an old-timey favorite of his.
And nearby, on Whittier Boulevard, Clearman’s Steak & Stein. Extremely old school, and a tad less gimicky than the Northwoods Inn locations, but with the same time warp steak, seafood, cheesebread menu that hits the spot in the most retro fashion. (Whittier native, long departed, surprised and delighted that old main stays survive, but even more that new spots have taken over down town and in surrounding areas.)
Steak ‘N Stein is in our regular rotation.
In beforetimes, we would hit happy hour during the fall and winter by the fire pit.
The house made dressings and cheese sauce for the giant baked potato are great accompaniments to the cheese bread. Sometimes I don’t even need the steak.
Love the bar, too. Nice stiff drinks.
Don’t forget to try the pozole there.
We still have family there and go to Whittier regularly. I said to hubs that I would like to checkout the old-timey places he used to go.
FTC happy hour?
What’s the name of the restaurant (maybe a steakhouse) that is/was along the 5 freeway, maybe around Norwalk, that looked like a farm building and had fake snow on the roof? Not sure if it’s still there or not as I rarely go by there. The post about Clearman’s made me think of it as I think the name was similar.
North Woods Inn
And it’s still there.
Smokehouse in Burbank is also good for old timey Hollywood. Food is…not memorable. But people love that garlic bread

I still like Musso & Frank and Dan Tana’s (just like others do in this thread), and Tower Bar.
For 2 at Musso & Frank: a martini and a Hanky Panky with their “dividend” / “sidecar” second helpings, split some fried oysters and fettucine alfredo to start, then grilled lamb’s kidneys with bacon and a prime rib or steak with green peppercorn sauce. At Dan Tana’s, calamari fritti, clams oreganata, veal or shrimp parmigiana, chicken marsala. The pasta sucks but the place gets a pass. The food isn’t great at Tower Bar, but Sunset Tower retains some charm with the Mayan Revival architecture and no picture policy. More of a lazy afternoon lunch place than a great meal.
Langer’s has a 1950s feel to me.
