Holy Basil

I would definitely prioritize that dish. Thai-Muslim dish you dont see around too often. Plus that sauce (definitely ask for extra if possible)…..banger

I think Lalarice serves a version of that dish (if anyone is looking for additional renditions).

Everything was so good. My mouth is watering just remembering that dinner.

Pad kee mao with hanger steak won my heart. Lamb biryani was bomb.

I liked the sausage in the yum kao crispy rice dish (wish i had more :face_savoring_food: but it might be fine for 2 people). I also liked the flavors of the nam tok tataki.

Santa Monica menu now super similar to Atwater and thank god because it is only 15 from my house. Everything was singing today, agreed on that Pad Kee Mao god damn it was good. We also loved the crispy rice with Naem.

Holy Basil/Na Na Thai Popup

Na Na Thai is a terrific, serious Thai restaurant in a Buellton strip mall. They’re part of the Bell’s/Bar Le Côte group. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Tonight was their first collaboration with Holy Basil Santa Monica.

Yum Kai Dao - Crispy Egg Salad [Holy Basil]

They really browned the egg! This was very well balanced – Tart dressing with chinese celery, red onion and roasted green chilis.

Moo Ping - Pork Skewers with Nam Prik Noom [Na Na Thai]

Excellent. Juicy with a sweet marinade. Came with a side of unpounded nam prik noom (roasted green chile dip).

Grilled Chicken Livers with Nam Jim Jeaw [Holy Basil]

Livers were nicely cooked. Soft, but not raw in the middle. The sauce was slick and nearly black with liver juices. Not as spicy or sharp as I’d hoped.

Red Curry with Minced Duck and Salted Egg [Na Na Thai]

Best dish of the night. This was closer in style to a jungle curry, though not nearly as spicy. No discernable amount of coconut milk. Herbal, fragrant, with a delicate spiciness. Wasn’t oily like some northern curries. Feel like they used chicken or duck stock as a base. SO GOOD.

Pad Thai with Grilled Prawn, Peanut [Na Na Thai]

Very good. Terrific attention to detail. Maybe a little sweet for our taste. Prawns were perfectly grilled.

Tom Yum Gai - Chicken Wings [Holy Basil]

There’s a lovely tom yum gai hiding in there somewhere but this was SUPER salty to the point of being inedible.

The food can be very spicy at Na Na Thai. Not so this evening. I suspect they eased up to align the spice levels with HB’s standard offerings.

This was the best meal we’ve had at HB Santa Monica. I sincerely hope Na Na will return for another collaboration!

Weekend special boat noodles were  nothing much to add from hppzz. Complex, rich, tastes nothing like what it looks and sounds. A little sourness and spice which worked wonderfully. First time boat noodle enjoyer fyi.

Delicious dinner at holy basil Atwater! I love the bold of flavors and spice it’s s-tier especially with some wine or beer. All hits, with our favorites being pad kee mao with their hanger steak (best pad kee mao ever exclaimed my wife), Panang curry pork collar, egg yolk squid, and the scallops, seafood tom yum, and rice salad. Unfortunately they were out of the kaeng curry prawns and the beef tataki. I would’ve ordered Ooe if my stomach could handle it lol. They were gracious enough to bring out two of their dishes they may be piloting for the tasting menu an egg yolk fish skin salad and a chive pancake in concentrated sweet soy (unpictured) both were very good and I can’t wait until their tasting location opens up, sounds like it will be pretty intimate with just 10 seats

Joy and deau are so friendly and gracious, deau stopped by to chat and he’d just returned from a trip to Thailand to see family and cook. Pretty excited to see what he has in store for the two new restaurants that are opening! Bang banged with magpies and taqueria frontera so stuffed.

Nobody else is doing cooking like that in their price range except maybe holbox.

Oh god yes so much great food. The mussels were absolutely amazing. I would get both in a heartbeat. The green curry risotto was just . I have only had great meals at Holy Basil with the OOE crew and this was no exception. I think the only surprising thing was that I didn’t have to roll myself out of the restaurant this time. If this was closer to me my wallet would be quite sad. :joy:
