JeetKuneBao's NYC (and nearby) eats

Concur that lunch at Jo is really good. We were able to order both the unagi bowl (very crispy, with rich satisfying miso soup) and cold soba (probably the first time I really enjoyed soba). With tips though the price gets a bit high, so it will have to be a once in a while treat as opposed to no brainer every week visit. We will definitely be back for kappo

just now. place de fetes (clinton hill)
charming wine bar and great hosts (great sales guys, too).
checked it out off the street and was looking for a bar seat and was gonna flake when they said they only had spots against the wall, but then they said first drink on us try a snack,
and then i folded and got a full meal (but got my first glass of albariño and the pickled mussels on the house <3).

bangs island mussels en verde (pickled mussels) - winner with some bread to sop up the sauce

heirloom tomato toast with tonnato - winner with a mussel on top

crispy maitake mushrooms with black garlic fudge - kind of a forward flavor, maybe a tad over salted, and black garlic feels a little dated to me somehow - esp since I grew up with it as medicine. good batter and fry though. powder felt a little superfluous. a tasty dish nonetheless.

campanelle, soup de poisson, summer squash - lightly piquant, nice sweet summer squash, would’ve liked a bit more bite on the pasta. maybe one of the weaker dishes. didn’t realize how much fat was coating my tongue til i finished it and got more of the tannins from the red

this garnaxta that was lovely on the nose

corn ice cream with polenta crumble (was a bit hard on the teeth, but as a whole delicious).

not pictured: the albariño, and a glass of apple eau de vie that tasted more scary than pleasant (bit on the ethanol + bathroom cleaner side though occasionally some soft apple notes)

tsukemen at tabetomo (east village). really well balanced. surprising amount of acidity already present (not a lime situation like Tsujita). accidentally got myself trapped into replying in my limited japanese which was confusing the waitress as we kept switching back and forth,

taste good (elmhurst)

ordered char kway teow (underseasoned sadly) and pandan ayam (think a miscommunication happened - somehow came without pandan)
but i like the gruff male owner (i assume) who approves of a good appetite and clean plates.

Love PDF - friends of mine from when I lived next door to Oxalis. Great people and great food. Can’t wait for oxalis to reopen for when I’m back in NY

Finally made it here since we were passing through the area. I had written it off at the beginning when all its hype was about vibe (still very loud) and how “out there” the dishes are (we googled what the table directly in front of us were having, the dishes looked really…unique). However, with help from various online sources, it seems like the consensus winner dishes are indeed very good.

We also loved the garlic babka - reminded us of the killer monkey bread Runner Up used to offer some time ago, the spicy caesar - I remember being very impressed by Quality Italian’s salads once upon a time, and the filleto + cacio e pepe raviolo. In addition, the very showy lemon cheesecake dessert was worth it for us, though portions were a bit much.

All in all, it left us really great impressions in a city full of good Italian American options.

Short work trip.

Not a lot of late night options near Bryant Park. 7th St Burgers. A bit greasy but tasty.

L’Industrie is still tops for me.

Tonchin. One of the best bowls of ramen I’ve had in ever. Paper thin chasu pork. Piping hot well balanced delicious broth. Not too greasy and porky. Didn’t leave the fat all over my lips. Great noodles. Very crowded on Wednesday night with ~45 min wait.

How long did you wait for lindustrie

Totally forgot to mention. I went on Tuesday around 6:30pm during Rosh Hashana. There were 3 people ahead of me in line. It was the best.

The other times I’ve been the wait has been ~30/40 mins to order then another ~10/15 mins for the slices to be ready.

Wow you scored!

Not sure how late, but you can try Kati Roll Company, Upside pizza, BXL, Sake Bar Hagi (a few blocks up), and Koreatown (a few blocks down).

My favorite late night food besides sandwiches from a deli is the skewer cart on Grand Street by Sara D. Sure beats some cheap halal. Each skewer is only a few bucks and the smoke/seasoning is so good. Not related but there is one in Flushing I believe. If I was staying in Midtown I would hop on the train for that

Liberty Bagels is the most mediocre of NY bagels. I knew it as soon as I saw Oreo cream cheese as an option. I knew it when the cashier kept asking everybody if they wanted their bagel toasted. The only thing they got going for them is that both side of my everything bagel was properly populated.

If you are contemplating going to the 36th and 7th ave location walk the extra 15 mins and go to Utopia on 34th and Lex.

Agree!

They are very strategic in their locations being the closet bagel shop to Wall Street, Empire State Building/Macys, Central Park South for that tourists $$$$ lol I think they were big on those ridiculous rainbow bagels

Sad. But this is such a New York quote:

“Eli has always wanted to be able to control his own destiny and has always enjoyed the East Side, whereas we had more of the social ethic of the West Side.”

Roscioli Roman Feast with reserve wine pairings for a work dinner. The wines were excellent. The food was good not great except for the Amitriciana which was delicious. I wish we were served more pasta. Very nice tiramisu which wasn’t too sweet and had a great chocolatey coffee flavor.

Bad Roman. My 2nd visit. The pastas really shine here. The cacio pepe was served with an unusual shape pasta - penne luongo. I was skeptical but the pasta was great. Steak with the cheese ravioli was a little gimmicky but the steak itself was delicious. Enjoyed the veal Milanese. Great presentation of the lemon cheesecake. Delicious to boot. The meal at Bad Roman was better than Roscioli.

some new food pics in NY:

best bite of the trip goes to..

A patty melt with griddled onions, Vermont cheddar, bacon and pickled green tomato from Rose Marie, the new sister restaurant of Yellow Rose. Wowza, just right. Charming new rustic restaurant in Williamsburg with some southern twang.

Other dishes from Rose Marie:

gem salad - pepperoncini, candied walnuts, red onions, whipped ricotta, herbs. The whipped ricotta on this salad was delicious.

Saltine crusted flounder - nice ratio, breaded and fried just right and the flounder was so tender. Steamed broccoli and remoulade brought it together.

Heritage pork chop - the grits in olive oil were nice and the pork chop was well cooked but a bit too salty, you don’t want salt to take over the entire flavor profile.

and a great ending with semolina cake w/ whipped marscapone, vanilla ice cream, macerated fruit. delicious.

pastel de campechanas, a delicious and behemoth dessert at the new Midtown Mexican steakhouse, Cuerno. @js76wisco fyi this seems to be the new favorite spot for work dinners. have everyone start off with a ribeye taco.

new slice shop on Nassau Ave in Greenpoint, Diamond Slice. By the slice, so tons of variety here. Meanwhile down the block, Chrissy’s is by the pie only. Got a Sicilian and was told by the employee that their caesar slice is their signature. The Sicilian was nice, dough was pillowy, I say a minute longer would have added a nice slight crisp to really ace it. Caesar slice was surprisingly good, had a nice fishy flavor to it that worked here, but trying it out once was good enough for me.

stopped by Mommy Pai’s, the new casual sister spot to Thai Diner, fast food style menu. I got the Mommy royale, essentially a Thai fried chicken sandwich with fries. It was huge and it filled me up, but I kind of wish I changed it up from the usual and got a filet o’tofu or something new. The fries were good too, but their tropical drinks were my favorite. I got the thai pineapple basil one and it was super refreshing.

2 bowls of Ukrainian borscht from 2 different spots. Top is vegetarian, bottom has meat. The almighty wall street bath house on the bottom.

Great post! I notice this issue at a lot of slice shops, though maybe not as much at the noveau New York places like L’Industrie, Mama’s Too, Lucia. Reheats are usually underbaked for my palate, especially on Sicilian.

I always wanted to try that restaurant in bath house. Had Veselka which I enjoyed. Wait time was insane

Thanks. Cuerno is definitely on the list. I’ve heard good things about Gui as well. Golden HOF has the Golden Diner pancakes for dessert now. Definitely some better midtown options.

Somebody also told me Monkey Bar is affiliated with 4 Charles so you can get a similar burger and prime rib. Since I’m never getting into 4 Charles that’s also on my list.

Have you been to Golden Diner yet? A little bit away from Midtown East but worth it imo. Those are seriously the best pancakes ever.

Not yet. Still need to go - many of my friends rave about the food not just the pancakes.
