Glad to see a shout out to Swingers. An old school coffee shop, not quite the level of Pann’s, but a solid neighborhood spot that has a broad menu, generally well prepared, and an old school vibe. Not a lot of spots like this around any more.
Is it just a weird color cast, or was the pancake really that orange-y brown???
I love the vibes! I’ll be back. I love that they close at 3am.
So far been to Pann’s, Norms La Cienega, Nicks (Chinatown), Cindy’s (Eagle Rock), Du-Pars, any other diners I need to visit?
They were whole wheat pancakes!
House of breakfast, Olympic cafe in ktown
Okay, I was wondering if they had some other type of flour in there! How were they???
I liked it. As good as vegan whole wheat pancakes can be. There was also banana slices in the cake which I liked. I think they gave me a 4 stack.
Don’t take my opinion too serious as I like pretty much every pancake even McD’s, Norms, IHOP, lol!!!
With so few places open that late it’s pretty damn good

House of Pies, Rae’s, Nick’s, Original Pantry, Mel’s on Sunset (used to be Ben Franks)…
LSXO (Huntington Beach)
I can understand why it’s hard to get into this place…it’s literally tiny. Maybe it seats 30 including the bar. But I love that it’s tucked inside BlueGold like a little secret and is closer than Irvine.

Food was fun and service was great. The giant windows allowing views of the beach and sunset were lovely. I was there for a friends’ dinner so I went along with what folks wanted to order.
quite enjoyed it. For folks interested, i noticed that the bar was empty most of the Friday evening I was there and the bar is available for walk-ins.

This place is just so solid time after time. Dropped in last minute because we were in the neighborhood and had no problem getting a table. Lucky us…I thought it is always packed out.
Amuse - corn soup with Thai basil oil…delicious!
Tuna toast…this was the consolation since Eggs on Toast was 86ed for the day.
Farmer’s market gems
Corn angolotti
Braised short ribs with polenta
Crème brûlée - mango, pandan, passionfruit, puffed rice…holy hell…like if mango sticky rice and crème brûlée had a glorious baby
Soufflé pancake - great, but not as spectacular as the Spago version I had in April…but I appreciate that this one is smaller
Not pictured: baguette with both butter and pan drippings because we left a party hungry
We really don’t go here as much as as we should. The food and service is truly a delight. I love the mix of casual, but formal service and everything out of the Manzke kitchen. Cocktails were also great…I had two seasonal Peaches made with a mezcal base.
Danbi. New Michelin Guide Korean restaurant in Koreatown. We view this one the same way. Decent restaurant with competent cooking and very good ingredients. Not in the same league as Baroo.

Help me @chandavkl , you’re my only hope…
Banh Mi Hoa Phat
got @NYCtoLA’fluenced. the banh mi heo quay (crispy pork belly) is so good, must order. bread is great and the crispy pork skin is a game changer.
I didn’t get a good picture because I devoured this in my car, the veggies come nicely packaged on the side and it comes with a container of jus for extra porkiness.
review forthcoming @NYCtoLA @hppzz @Clayfu?
you can also get a side of just the crispy roast pork to snack on while driving.
Wow! Between the fantastic banh mi baguette roll itself and the pork…looks pretty epic.
We are celebrating Spain’s Euro 2024 win by eating a red+gold treat: Sugar Lady white peach from Andy’s Orchard!!!

They really deserved it
Match was closer than I expected
England waits
Agree. Espana went 7-0 in the tournament.
Will see how the Copa match goes tonight…
(The peach was soft, sweet as summer can be, juicy and perfect.)

Peony: I wouldn’t go back. I’m not a big fan of this restaurant. I find the food a little bit on the bland side. I liked the flavor of the rice more than the tandoori and the paratha.
Warrior: I liked it more than Peony. I was impressed by the juiciness of all the tandoori items. I was disappointed that the vegetables in the korma were frozen, but I felt it otherwise had a good, rich flavor. But I agree I wouldn’t go back given how far it is from LA. Khan Saab Desi is better.
My daughter introduced me to Barro Santos, https://www.barrasantosla.com/, last night. It’s a small Portuguese cafe in Cypress Park. While it was crowded the noise level wasn’t deafening. The food was excellent.
We started with the “Lisbon Special”, small plates of the three appetizer options, marinated olives, Iberico ham, and a seeded baguette with a tasty hunk of cheese.
Next up was a good tuna crudo.
This was followed by an excellent endive salad with toasted almonds, and a hard cheese.
Daughter’s main was a daily special, seared cuttlefish. While the flavor was very good I think it was a bit overcooked as it was somewhat chewy.
This was followed by the hit of the night a “Bifana”, pork sandwich. Pork was perfectly cooked, still pink, juicy and warm. The bread was the ideal wrapper, warm, crusty, tasty but not stealing anything from the pork. It was the best thing I have had in a restaurant this year.
Highly recommend this lovely, little place!
I’ve only had cuttlefish as the dried Asian snack (which is insanely chewy). I know nothing about cuttlefish otherwise. Is it a fish that easily turns chewy? Just wondering if that’s the way it’s “supposed” to be.
Food looks delicious.
