lunch from spaccio salumeria on washington. i got the “mezzaluna” special with mortadella and mozz di bufala, SO got the panino piccante with spicy salami and olive tapenade. it came out to around $50 after tax and tip.
Hey! Two of my favorite places! I know that Salumeria is a bit on the expensive side, but their meatball sandwich is the best thing ever. It’s always fun to pop in. It’s such a hub of cool italianess.
I forgot who mentioned Garlic High at the Tokyo Central in Yorba Linda but I finally went.
Great bowl of ramen. Garlic is definitely present but balances nicely with tonkatsu broth. Excellent chashu. It was rolled up similar to porchetta with great tender porky flavor. Noodles were home made and different than most other ramen places. Different texture and bounce than the normal yellow alkaline noodles. Would definitely come back and a nice addition to the area.
Order at the kiosk. Only downside in is if you’re time constrained. There is 1 guy in the kitchen making each bowl as it’s ordered.
Agreed. I went there a few weeks ago and had their soupless version and found it incredible. I love the thick chewy noodles and the rich garlic flavor. In the realm of Ramen, I perfer soupless Tan Tan (Josui is my reigning champ for that, but Moto Ramen will do in a pinch). But the pork was indeed amazing.
Pro Tip. The Kiosk ordering means you can do an easy custom order. P. got the small bowl, but added additional pork. He was a happie man.
Ordered delivery today from Pontu - Peruvian place on Ocean Park in Santa Monica.
It was really good – and one of the few delivery experiences I have done where I don’t think the food suffered from the delivery process. Got the half chicken which was tender and not dried out at all – definitely packaged properly so it did not continue to cook in the delivery container. Came with three sauces – one red, one green and one kind of pinkish. The sauces were nice, and one had a real kick, but the chicken didn’t even need the sauces to be tasty. Chicken is actually your only choice here – either chicken plate, chicken salad or chicken wrap. Fine by me – do one thing and do it well. https://www.pontu.la/_files/ugd/6c3131_c93c7a3c6a72405a921389025cfdbf76.pdf
For sides, I chose the house salad and market vegetables (beets, carrots, radish, green beans,
cauliflower, snap peas - all uncooked). It came in one box so at first I thought they had forgotten my market vegetables, but then I realized the vegetables were mixed in with the salad. Anyway, the salad with the mixed in vegetables was delicious. Everything tasted farmers’ market fresh. Better salad than in many fine dining restaurants and with the mixed in vegetables, it could have been a meal in itself.
This delivery reminded me of bygone days when it didn’t seem as difficult as today to find quality reasonably priced food on the Westside. I will definitely order from them again.
Also, I went to the Tokyo Central on PCH for the first time and was surprised to see Garlic High there too! Kiosk ordering and they do to go. Dangerous for me now.
Speaking of good chicken delivery. We took a chance on Josiah Citrin’s Augie’s on Main by delivery. Dirty chicken held up really well through the process. The white meat was very tender and the panko crust stayed crispy. Really smart technique, I think it would be hard to get a crispy chicken skin while keeping the breast that uniformly tender.
Now I have no idea what Kasama tastes like, but this was pretty good. Lots of textures and flavors…the beef longanisa is a great sausage patty. I’d have preferred a little more of their spicy aioli for a little more heat and a little more seasoning in the egg soufflé.
My 20 minute quote today was wrong by about 15 minutes. I walked in around 11:30AM and there was no line to order.
Needless to say, it brought in a lot of traffic to the coffee/matcha shop. There’s a grocery store in the plaza to pick up shelf stable items if you want to pass the time, too.
Two 3-oz tenderloin medallions and a generous serving of fries.
While on paper these are the same fries as HiHo, in reality they are significantly better, cooked to order, expertly fried, topped with just the right amount of microgreen. If the HiHo fries are a B+ these are an A. They are the closest thing I’ve found to the legendary Majordomo BS fries (which are an A+++).
The steak is served similarly to all other beef at Matū - a smidge before medium rare. It’s the right cook for this beef, and it’s unsurprisingly delicious. It’s New Zealand Wagyu, however, so it’s softer than a typical tenderloin, at least partially due to the more dispersed and accentuated marbling.
The au poivre is wonderful. On the milder side, but not lacking flavor. Hints of cream without overdoing it.
Add on an order of delicious broccolini to make it a more balanced meal.
I’d say this is tied with Violet Bistro for my favorite steak frites in LA. Violet more traditional, Matū more “nouveau”.
Highly recommend giving it a go before it’s off the menu. My server said that the prep of the sauce takes valuable kitchen space (and time), and it’s another cut competing for the grill, so it’s logistically difficult to offer it. Do I believe that? Yes. Do I think they could add it as a permanent option if they were so inclined? Also yes.
$58 per person.
Monday nights through the end of the summer.
Brentwood location only.
