June 2023 Rundown

How was it?!! I so want to try but I worry I’ll feel dumb paying the Tourist mark up for something not as good as Prime up the street. (Or Vito’s for that matter!)

I think the price would be the same if this were offered at Friends & Family on Hollywood, it’s a great slice

I know I’m supposed to fall for Goop’s healthful image, tasteful photography and effective marketing and leave these other details unquestioned. But I won’t do it! I refuse! I am the eldest boy!

So it IS the same people. There is no reference to it on their website I wondered if someone just thought it also sounded cool! Thanks for the report! Will try soon!

RE: Goop Salad. I LOVE Salad. Hubs is on a health kick and wanted to try Mushroom Carnitas… So I visited goop kitchen in BH recently. First, not sure if it’s all locations, but this is essentially a ghost kitchen. Running out a little office cafe. Second, the prices were decent. About the same I would pay for Simply Salad (which I enjoy their wraps). I ordered the cob salad with chicken supplement, But when I got it, the portions were small. Everything was cooked well though. I totally enjoyed my salad. Hubs liked his Mushroom Bowl. Nothing mind blowing (We both agree that it did not beat our usual orders from Mizlala) but we liked it better than other healthy chains.

And YAY for Everytable!

Tacos Zempoal - Pomona

If your ever out in Pomona area at night, definitely stop at Tacos Zempoal on Mission Blvd sort of near the big Bank of America at the Garey Ave intersection.

I got this concoction they call the Zempoal Especial which is bacon, onions, peppers, cheese on fresh made tortillas topped with carne asada and the most flavorful al pastor and slices of avocado.

They also have a great spicy salsa and avocado salsa which is the cherry on top.

The tacos are also delicious. The tripas was on par with most good tripas tacos but that al pastor taco was elite level.

fuck that looks good

Tendon Tempura Carlos Junior

Finally made it.

The tempura really is a delight so long as you eat it quickly. Very light and crispy batter. Well-seasoned and only felt greasy when left in the rice bowl too long to sog.

My mushroom bundle got a little soggy and greasy since I chose to eat it last. I usually love the pumpkin the most, but the eggplant was really really good. I saved the egg for last so I could bust it open over the sauced rice.

The pickled vegetables were a nice foil to the fried items and carbs. The celery was quite good!

Miso soup also had a good depth that’s missing from a lot of miso soups.

My friend hit the sashimi rice bowl + tempura.

They turn things around quickly. I think we were in and out in about 40 minutes.

Palette Tea House, San Francisco, Ghirardelli Square.

I’ve been wanting to try this place ever since they opened. By the same family that has brought you Koi Palace and Dragon Beaux. Also Koi Palace Express at SFO LMAO. Saw Chris Consentino at the terminal with his wife and kids in front of the Robot Barista getting coffee lol. Cmon Chris you can do better!

Anyways……

Whoa. This char siu is spectacular. Incredibly tender and flavorful. I am not sure if I have room for Hing Lung’s duck or San Tung chicken wings.

Scallop siu mai. Best siu mai I ever put in my mouth.

Classic ha gow done very well.

Snow mountain char siu bao.

Typhoon Shelter style fried Ha Gow. I likey, nice concept.

Palette and Dragon are easily the best dim sum restaurants in the country. San Francisco has the best dim sum scene in the whole country at all 3 different price tiers.

They are coming to the San Gabriel Valley. You heard it here first or did Eater beat me to it. Arcadia is a possible spot. This is all per manager.

Yes there is plenty of Chinese customers and workers but a good amount of non-Chinese people too. You don’t need to speak Cantonese or Mandarin here. It’s cool to see different people taking part in this old Cantonese tradition.

Buddha Jump Over The Wall Bao. Good concept but kinda bland and the bao just melted.

Lava buns.

Now I am going to watch some baseball.

When they open in SGV it will be the biggest most anticipated opening in the Chinese community.

My old-school foodie hairdresser who’s a big fan of the place says to go only on the weekend.

This kinda looks to me like goon tong gao that’s served with red vinegar. Could be a variation of it but in that case, yeah the skin is a little bit thin and doesn’t hold all that well.

I think that’s a general rule for most dim sum restaurants the weekends are probably better ( it more crowded!)

It does look like a variation of it. I never ordered that before.

Saint Frank’s flight for all you coffee snobs

This is great news. Is there an article in Eater?

I don’t think so.

This is info I only heard from a manager at Palette and not an official release. To paraphrase,

“The owners are looking for a place in LA. Maybe Arcadia.” (I am guessing the surrounding SGV cities as well).

I also DM them last year about opening up in SGV and they also stated they are looking into it.

If Eater wants to pick it up and ask more @matthewkang go for it.

It’s gonna be big news when they do open up.
