Where is your favorite?
At home. I use Rick Martinez’s recipe: Chili Colorado Is the Greatest Recipe of All Time | Bon Appétit
Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever ordered it at a restaurant.
I dunno about best but I always like it at Omanas in Pomona
The chile rojo (either as a plate or as the meat in a burrito) is really good at My Taco in Highland Park. Spicier than most typical versions.
Is this place good? I’ve passed it often.
I would say it’s a typical neighborhood Mexican-American restaurant, but it happens to do a couple of dishes really well. The chile rojo, which I love. And the potato tacos. For what it’s worth, I was first turned onto this place by Jonathan Gold, who liked the carne asada fries (which I think for sure has been superceded by better versions elsewhere) and the lamb barbacoa.
Damn, I gotta give it a try. A google search for My Taco found some interesting results. Here’s Michael Cimarusti: I love My Taco in Highland Park for its lamb, potato tacos, chili verde, chili rojo, chili relleno, and the plato de carne asada. If you get to know George, the chef, who trained at the Cordon Bleu and under Octavio Becerra at Palate, he might just make you a plate of grilled chicken-thigh fries with queso fundido, jalapeño, cilantro, and red onion. My Taco is renowned for its carne asada fries, and George’s new version is a bit lighter, more vibrant, and more colorful, and somehow it seems healthy.
And here’s an excerpt from LA Taco in 2009. Not sure that this would get past editors today, ha. “The girls who work here are super hot and the vibe is cozy yet festive, with a very West Indian attitude towards color.”
I never liked My Taco, it was always slow, felt like they always screwed up part of my order, and I think it wasn’t good enough to overcome that. My wife, on the other hand, loves it, and we used to live right up the street. So I’ve been there a lot. The lamb is decent and that chile rojo is good too. Would avoid mariscos. My wife loves the bean and cheese burritos, which I think are alright though like 1/3 of the cheese is frequently unmelted (she likes this for some reason?).
You got another Mexican American (or Mexican rec) in the area? Lol at the unmelted cheese.
Huarache Azteca. No chile rojo or colorado there, though.
Huarache Azteca is a good call! Cacao is a little hit or miss but is generally pretty solid. Could always pop down to Lincoln Heights for Pancho Lopez or El Arco.
I’m making this right now.
whoa. the lamb and chile rojo are pretty much the only items my wife and i order at My Taco. ![]()
El Ruso does chile Colorado. I’m very experienced with that dish so can’t comment on how it stacks up, though I like their version.
