We tried Maydan restaurant last night. Did not love it and doubt I will be eating at the mothership anytime soon. First gripe, I tried changing my resv on OT for an hour later. Despite tons of slots, OT said I had to call the restaurant, which has no fucking phone number. Not to mention, it’s $25 pp if you flake out on your res. We managed to adjust and make it on time. On to the food. While I appreciate the quality of the ingredients, most of the items we ordered were way to sweet. Case in point, the muhammara was swimming in pomegranate molasses, rending the dish very sweet. In contrast, at both Carrousel and Marouch, the muhammaras are well balanced, though unique to their recipes. I had asked the server if the muhammara was sweet as we prefer spicey/savory to sweet. She said it was not sweet. Then the sweet potatoes arrived, bathed in guess what, honey! Entire plate was lacquered with honey. Not an element of acid to be found. Tomato salad was excellent with a zippy vinaigrette and ripe tomatoes. Next came the skewers, lamb and chicken. These were very good, though the lamb had a slight sweetness from the marinade. The chicken was nice. Both meats very tender. The pickled onions would have been a great addition to the sweet potatoes. We kept watching the tlayudas come off the grill wishing they dropped one in front of us. Oh well…
I’m just gonna do Yhing Yhang BBQ there for the foreseeable future…
sorry, i get a lot of anxiety when i post anything that doesn’t agree with general opinion here and disappear for a while. that’s the exact chilaquiles spot and both fri+sat yes. good and honest dude working there.
i genuinely don’t want to get into an argument here, either. i have no animosity towards you at all. i was just talking about West Adams pricing for what’s being offered (grilled Thai + the tlyaudas in particular).
as far as pricing, though? this is what my mom and i got for $48.08 after 20% tip at Yhing Yhang (funny play on words my Thai mom had to explain to me) which includes picking up your own order and bussing it–which i don’t mind at all. just saying…
that’s $50 at lunch time.
i 100% agree with you about Vicky’s, though.
yeah, sorry, i’ll try to be around more.i just don’t know how well received street vendors and food out of backyards is received here vs a lot of the splurge stuff with sides of caviar i’m still able to do on rare occasion. thank you for saying that.
i’m always looking for new spots – backyards, trucks, stands, whatever. i thought your contribution was great.
Fair! I was talking about the restaurant itself. I talked to Deau from Yhing Yhang today about the regular non tasting menu pricing. The plates are 22$ which isn’t cheap but the quality is there so it’s hard to say if I think it’s too cheap or expensive. There’s some finagling to do for pricing for sure. He’s really interested in how they can serve the neighborhood better and if that’s menu changes or more of the seated dinner model.
(Since my original post Maydan itself has raised some prices so…oof!)
Absolutely welcome info here!!!
Comedor Tenchita is close by and open on Sunday mornings. The restaurant is in the backyard and powered by all women. Highly recommended
I personally would love more street vendors/street food coverage here.
I think we been slacking in this department tbh. On the other hand it’s does require a little bit of work. Driving thru streets, stopping, looking for signs. Than vendors can change from the am to the pm.
Have you been to Barbacoa Ramirez? Weekend mornings by Arleta DMV. I have them easily as e best tacos in LA. Sorry for going off topic
These are the reviews I look forward to the most!
i have! i think we’re both members of the Atotonilco El Grande Appreciation Club – some of my favorite tortillas in LA County.
I had no idea this was a multi-vendor market like Grand Central Market! Good to know! Honestly, the food I saw didn’t look very appealing. That moment in the video where the little girl looks at the tacos and says “yucky” pretty much summed up my reaction to everything shown. That said, I’ll check out other threads to see if the food tastes better than it looks. I’m posting this mainly for others who, like me, have driven by but never gone in and might not know what to expect. I still love the concept for the neighborhood and hope it succeeds.
Stick to Lugyah and Yhing Yhang as far as the vendors. I actually enjoyed a sandwich at Vesti but they’re out of there now. I think the pozole/taco place is still figuring things out - it’s quite expensive. I enjoy the regular maydan restaurant (the big seated one) but it’s not a destination.
We love good food in unlikely and untraditional places!
What’s wrong with Vicky’s?
Also, just read this whole thread thank you all for breaking it down so beautifully!
