My list of top 10 "essential" restaurants in LA (feel free to add yours)

He covers plenty of casual ethnic eateries. Our tastes just seem to align, especially on all the Asian and Mexican food. No, I eat everywhere. Columbian food for lunch today for example.

Interesting. Just out of curiosity, what are some places on Gold’s list that aren’t on the Weekly’s that you love? (I pointed out HH and L&S going the opposite way for me above)

La Fonda Antiquena?

Been wanting to try that place for a long ass time!

I didn’t even know we’re discussing Weekly’s list. It started with Adana so I turned it off. This Armenian was under-impressed.

That’s my spot. It’s incredible. The fish soup they have is a personal favorite on hangover days

Er…what thread do you think you are posting in?.. And… what list did you prefer J Gold’s list to if you have no idea you’re discussing the Weekly’s list?..

You know the Weekly’s list is posted alphabetically…right?

I’m responding to the original post, where dude puts up his own list of 10 and refers to J Gold. Can you stop auditing my posts?

did you post about your experience with adana? id like to read that.
the room is butt ass ugly and it takes forever to get the darn food, but ive enjoyed it.
of course, my expertise with things armenian (other than hitting the neighborhood joints) pretty much begins and ends with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Not sure if I can find. Basically it did not add up to any level approaching essential for me. It is a very middle eastern fusion restaurant, which in itself is fine, my biggest issue with it was their effort to be modern and more upscale. You can read that as smaller portions and higher prices. That’s just not in our culture of extreme food hospitality. Dishes were pretty good, though for kabob dishes we are used to a lot more mesquite charcoal. Best dish was their fattoush salad which actually used some purslane, which nobody else seems to do. It isn’t exactly fair of me to just write them off as NOT the #1 Armenian place in LA because I can’t seem to ever come up with what is the #1 that is easily accessible to non Russian Armenians. I’m always leaning to Golden Fork (vanowen) for best overall enjoyment

Heno is god!

Thanks @Nemroz. If I may ask, by “easily accessible” do you mean there are some restaurants you like that would need a translator if non-Russian Armenians went? Or the flavors might be too extreme?

Thanks.

on no, not the flavors, just the issues with language barriers… food is just good, the biggest extreme would be a spicy eggplant spread… i think golden fork may have an english menu though… the way we do it is banquet style though, with courses and a really big party, that’s where you get the most out of it… we obviously bring a lot of our own alcohol as well… also Americans would probably get very upset about the scruff men at their table smoking cigarettes indoors while our kids run around being loud lol. food’s good though…

Thanks @Nemroz. Ah, I see!

Can’t wait to try Golden Fork then. What are your recommended dishes there?

What is a good typical dish from central Ohio? :stuck_out_tongue:

thanks for the info.

oddly, i find it hard to find armenians that DO speak russian around my 'hood.
seems to be a generational thing, mostly.
i got enough odd looks after saying thank you in russian, i stopped.
zoroaster forbid i learn to say thank you in armenian, for cryin out loud.

haha…yep… that’s why i never hang in your hood either… most of my types live around van nuys/north hollywood etc. i like the city though. honestly, if you’re at all decent at grilling, just go to our market and make some shashlik yourself

It’s very much a generational thing. Don’t even mention Russian food or, god forbid, speak the language to elder Central Europeans.

ive been fortunate to speak with a couple/few young armenians about language and such. theyve been very polite and forthcoming about giving me the 411.
as faber said, knowledge is good.

You know what is genuinely nutty, that I just noticed about both the 101 and 99? No Maple Block…

I actually find that really stunning, I just assumed it must be on one of them in my mind.

That can be a dangerous mistake. I once said “spaciba” to a bunch of Georgians who did not take kindly to it lol.
