Northeast Los Angeles eats

Anyone else tried Shins Pizza?

it’s solid. a little too pricey for a plain slice, like everything in LA now. Crust is strong, sauce is good (acidic/bright NYC style). Not enough cheese. Not even in the same ballpark of the top 10 in NYC these days, but good for LA. The fusion-y things don’t quite work.

Yeah Juquilita is still better for pastor, I’m lazy in that La Guera is walking distance for me. Also I think their asada when freshly grilled is super strong, along w/ suadero.

Other new development is these guys Tacos El Chivo from Anaheim have been setting up a stand on Hillhurst & Price most nights outside the Albertsons. Estillo TJ, handmade tortillas, TJ-style guaca-salsa, al pastor with a very aggressive dark smoky dried chile vibe.

Totally agree. Shins is good but not quite there as a drive across town destination. Seems like these places don’t totally understand a NY slice, though in fairness Scarr’s kinda started the trend of less cheese/sauce/gluttony. Not unrelated, I feel similar about QSPC, undersauced/undertopped.

Don’t get me started on the NYC trend (saw it last month at both Mama’s Too and Lucia Pizza of Avenue X) of grating fresh parmesan on a New York slice. It’s revolting lol.

And thanks for this. Gotta check it out.

Tacos El Chivo really expanding. They’ve been kicked off a bunch of street corners and parking lots in the North OC. Always crowded. Good salsa bar. My favs are the cabeza and al pastor.

Where is this one?

Santa Monica Blvd right next to Hollywood Forever entrance.

There’s also one in Ktown on 4th if I’m not mistaken.

Pre order a regular pie at Secret Pizza for Saturday evening since I’ll be in the area. This is going to be a bang bang with a slice at Shins. I am not going to eat the whole pie so if you want the rest for free let me know lol

Secret Pizza pies looks like a neighborhood joint in Queens/Brooklyn

Shins Pizza.

Meat slice. Finally I feel seen by them including Chinese sausage. The flavor is there imo. The concept, menu, and Asian ingredients are great.
The Asian pear salad was nice but maybe the nuttiness took away from the sweet and fresh Korean pear

Sadly the crust was kinda soft and floppy. Barely any char at the underboob. I did confirm that the slices are reheated but I don’t think my slice was. The slice was lukewarm with no crisp at all. Also I don’t know why some places in LA the pizza is “wide and short” kinda like Danny Boys.

Huge potential here to be some spectacular pizza but you can’t have a great slice without great crust.

“Wooder” ice.

Great concept but probably wouldn’t be acceptable in South Philly with that texture. See John’s or Pops in South Philly for the platonic form. @PorkyBelly don’t bother with the water ice here

Cool Giving Tree mural around the corner!

I am with you on the cheese. Barely any.

Unfortunately my crust was a flop (see what I did there)

Secret Pizza.

There are walkup slices but it’s mostly preorder whole pies.

Came right at my pickup time and my pizza was sitting in that box.

I think a better judge would be to reheat this and for @js76wisco to try. Cause it looks and tastes like a “boro slice”. I wish the crust again was more crisp and I think there was some cornmeal on it.
