Yesterday:
This morning:
Eat real Thai food every day or three and your digestive system will adjust to the higher level of capsicum, fiber, and herbs.
We went to northern Thai last week and didn’t feel that it was anywhere near as spicy as say luv2eat.
NTFC’s Nam Prik Noom was the only dish that was spicier than I anticipated. And I have to accept some responsibility in this case: I assured the gentleman who took my order that “Ped Mak” was no problem for me.
I got the Tom kha soup yesterday and it was insanely spicy
i hope we dont have to get into the discussion again that not all dishes are meant to be spicy so it depends what you got.
I got the haeng lay, larb, jackfruit salad, khao soi, nam prik.
I understand that all the dishes are not spicy but the larb and nam prik did not approach close to the levels of luv2eat spiced dishes.
went back today.
i was going to try the two selections on the left based on the advice of the thai customer in line ahead of me, but then they brought out a fresh container of larb so i got an order of that too. they thought i was ordering to go so they used the to go plasticware before they realized i intended to eat there. they then suggested that i add an order of sticky rice, which i did.
the first time i was there, i was in a group with questionable table manners eating family style and it was a case of grab some while you can, which meant polishing off some of what was on your plate to make room for more. this is the wrong way to go about appreciating NTFC.
while it was only me which led to ordering fewer items (due to budgetary constraints) the fact that i had no competition for items allowed me to take a leisurely and more measured approach to trying each dish. thai cuisine is similar to that of their burmese (myanmar) neighbors, especially in how you can order a number of dishes, and each dish will have its own unique taste/spice/texture profile.
surprisingly, it was the chicken curry that was spiciest, thanks to the addition of these red chiles
the waitress watched me perspire and dutifully refilled my water glass as needed.and it was quite a few times as i took my time in between bites of haeng lay, larb and chicken curry with LOTS of coconut cream.
about a half hour into my introspection a waitress gave me some cucumber which she said was for eating with the larb.
of course, i had to try the nam pla prik with a couple of slices which i did. it’s a bit spicier than the nam pla prik i’ve had elsewhere.
i took leftovers home and ate them for dinner. it was like having another different meal; the flavors seem to have melded a bit and the chicken in particular had lost its kick to the point i didn’t sweat a drop at dinner. i don’t know how to explain it.
the bottom line: go and sample each dish and judge each one on its own merits and how it’s different from every other dish. i think you’ll end up enjoying the experience more this way.
Packed with non Thai for lunch today. Food still amazing but a huge huge decrease in heat now. I made sure to talk to them at length about it and they’re doing it because “many people don’t like that”. Serious difference in the level of joy, without that fire burn it’s not the same good time though quite tasty. Adding your own chili to bites is just not the same . (Taking about the jackfruit salad and lamb only, everything else isn’t a spicy dish)
I conclude, and I told them this straight out, that now they’re more like the other restaurants we already have and to stop listening to people.
KHL was insane today
That could be because Bill Addison was on the Good Food Podcast talking about it last week.
maybe meehan can turn the times food section into a force for good.
I kind of called it.
Good reminder to go back though.
Do podcasts have that much influence?
That show is also broadcast.
I have no idea.
Good Food with Evan Kleiman has been on KCRW for years, and she used to have Jonathan Gold report on a new favorite restaurant each week. When he passed, she had the 3 LA Times come one (they would rotate so that each one would get to review on their discovery of the week). Show is also available in podcast format and is very influential.
Another highly influential podcast is The Dave Chang Show. He brought attention to Spoon by H, and now a dessert place that was never full, now has long queues for a table.
I like the chicken wings here even though they’re a bit greasy. But, first time I ordered wings, they gave me 6 wings. 2nd time I ordered, they gave me 5. This most recent time I ordered wings, they have me 3. WTF.
maybe they’re UCLA fans?
I listen to those 2 and Air Jordan
First you get them hooked with proper spicing and many wings and when the masses are hooked you cut it with baby laxative
Piling on.
