the sesame chicken is great
Kushiba is no longer, replaced by a possibly promising Mexican place called A Tí. https://www.instagram.com/atilosangeles?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
We tried A Tí. The food was “fine,” but I wouldn’t go back.
Pico-Robertson jaunt
Nivessa Vinyl. Score!
Pizzeria Sei. The vegan items.
The marinara at $20 might be the best value for a restaurant of this caliber. A regular NYC slice is my favorite style of pizza but the flavor at Sei is so incredible. A true example of “less is more” and “quality ingredients” that defines Italian cooking.
The tomato sauce, thin sliced garlic, olive oil, salt, and basil! Wow! What a flavor bomb. The aroma when it hits the table!
Here is the latest menu
Had a really nice experience at Apey Kade yesterday. I really like their fish curry, which is made with Spanish mackerel. The dense oily flesh imitates the seer that you’d get in Colombo. Hoppers were good but I’d probably do pol roti next time. Squash curry was also fantastic.
This place is much better than Baja Subs. Also lol the coverage of Sri Lankan food in LA is comically bad. Bill Addison claims (in a published big LA times review) that the name “Apey Kade” is Tamil. It very much isn’t. It’s Sinhala. And so is the sign on the door. Insane miss.
Interesting folks in there. Spent a lot of time talking to customers and the owner about where to source Lankan arrack in the US. Also had a fascinating but somber chat with a Jaffna-born customer about his childhood there, etc.
Oh, great watalappam as well.
I second Apey Kade.
We hit this last weekend. So good! We told one of the owners it was our first time, and he gave us an assortment of some smalls before our hoppers and pittu.
So tough to find a reason for me to get to Encino or I’d be a regular
Wildcrust on York. Second night of their opening weekend.
The general takeaway: We’re coming here again. Excellent pizza and I don’t have to drive to Pico-Robertson or any farther west than Vermont.
Ample outdoor seating, whereas the interior main room was set up with two tops, two long tables with bench seating, and two half-round booths at the end. Open kitchen into the dining room means you hear the expo shouting all the #Chef things you want to hear.
Service: Prompt, expected, and pleasant, if not a bit self-conscious? We had the manager and at least two other leadership persons come check on us.
Okay. The goods.
-
Your Caesar Salad, accompanied by cheese. For this I did not feel skimped, as I am wont to do when ordering salad at a restaurant with this kind of per-plate price. Solid performer.
- Lamb Tzatziki (and my girlfriend’s hand), one of two pies. Very good, very consistent flavor throughout the bite, interrupted (pleasantly) by the mint; dough went a little thin toward the middle, but it and the crust overall had a pleasant chew. Both of us wished it had another layer in the mix.
- Funghi. The better of the two pies. The dough was cooked slightly better on this one, though not by much. A consistent funk conversant with the earthy mushroom running through the entire bite. Most. Excellent. Also: My girlfriend’s hand in action.
Regard. A close-up of the Funghi.
Grilled broccolini, once again, copious cheese. Underneath is a tonnato that was maybe a bit heavy on the mayo.
Also imbided: 3 beers and 1 glass of wine. We had a very pleasant experience, though we do have to mention that the pour on the wine is pretty weak. Like: Very weak.
In sum: We’re coming back to try the duck, duck, and duck: Grilled duck, duck croquettes, and duck liver mousse.
I’ll be giving this place a try soon as well. Thank you @avantbored for the first report.
So much good pizza in LA and OC. That salad has the right amount of cheese. Nice humble brag adding your girlfriend the hand model into the photos. Much nicer than George Costanza.
She’s got in a future in it!
Spent a few days in the DMV area on the East coast…
Also found the Fell’s Point Farmer’s Market on Saturday. Nice produce and some vendors bring out multiple freezer cases of proteins. I was incredibly impressed with the freezers of meat alone.
A visit to the DC Union Station Shake Shack was also involved. Also…East Coast Amtrak > West Coast Amtrak.
A light lunch at Pane Bianco. All good. As far as pizza by the slice goes, this is easily my favorite in LA.
I know this is sacrilege, but I also prefer the Sicilian at Pane Bianco to Quarter Sheets.
Did anybody see Al Michaels eating at Toscana in Brentwood this week? Apparently it’s his favorite restaurant in LA and eats there often. Probably brought the whole Thursday Night Football crew.
another visit to ramen ochi at century city mall. the tsukemen special. verging on too salty, but still very delicious. best noodles in the area, for sure. they removed the mazemen from the menu. not very busy at 730 on a thursday. one staff person working the floor – service was prompt and the noodles came out pretty quickly.
