October 2026 Rundown

Lunch today at Mish on La Brea.

Jenn Harris of the Los Angeles Times and I obviously have a very different palate because she just gave a rave review to Mish, singling out the matzo brei as the stuff of her “wildest dreams.” Review: Forget your grandma's matzo brei. This is the Jewish deli of my wildest dreams

I, by contrast, would describe the matzo brei as the stuff of my wildest nightmares. If it wasn’t the worst dish I have ever eaten in my life, it is definitely among the top five.

Mish Matzo Brie

I was a little confused initially by the fried egg, since I had assumed that the chef was cheffing things up, or gilding the lily so to speak, by adding a fried egg on top of scrambled eggs. But it turns out the fried egg is the only egg part of the dish. The rest of the dish consists of soggy, non-crisp balls of what are apparently matzo, but which do not taste of matzo. Rather, to me, the balls taste like someone decided to deconstruct Krispy Kreme donuts by breaking them into pieces, heavily salting them, then dousing them with maple syrup, and deep frying, and then bringing them to table topped by a fried egg. Minus the fried egg, it tasted to me like something you might find at a county fair, where they fry up oreos, Twinkies or whatever. Literally one of the worst things I have had in my life. Reminds me of college, where a friend used to put chocolate ice cream in his pancake batter. Yes, you could, but why would you?

The turkey sandwich I had last month at Mish wasn’t bad, so if I could ever bring myself to return, I would stick to the sandwiches.

New place Aguachiles and Asada on Broadway

LOVED it. The aguachile negro in particular had sichuan dry pot vibes for me, but lighter. obviously not numbing spices, but salsa macha/chile oil vibes? probably had some soy sauce?
I’ve only had holbox aguachiles, unfortunately haven’t been to a lot of other mariscos places. These are great though, super flavorful. Also got the mango habanero, and that was good, with real mango pieces. Refreshing, not too heavy. Great great QPR in my uninformed opinion. these were $6.50. Will go back for the $15 6oz portion to shovel the aguachile negro in my mouth.

Only downside is mosquitos at the outdoor patio. but it seems like they’re everywhere these days :frowning:

Some of the worst “jewish” food I’ve had in a while and I’ve had my aunt’s Rosh Hashanah brisket. The pastries are just poor. Sandwiches fine. Feels like they’re doing a media kick as when I went it was pretty empty. Won’t be going back.

Yes, the pastries at Mish are horrendous. And yes the turkey sandwich I had last month was fine. It was pretty crowded when I went Friday for lunch. I like the room, I like the energy, I like the music. I like the idea that they are open until 1:00 a.m. Thursday - Saturday, serving bar food and cocktails. I think L.A. needs more late night places where you can just hang out.

I just think you need to be very careful what you order at Mish because some of the stuff is not just ho-hum, but horrendous. I have not tried their Shakshuka, but given Jenn Harris’ enthusiastic description in her review that it comes with “a thick tomato sauce sweet with tomato jam,” I already know the Shakshuka is horrendous, unless maybe it is aimed at toddlers (although isn’t baby food less sugary then it was in days of yore)?

Well I’m not going to be going back. Pretty disappointed in LA times if this is the kinda food they want to promote in this city

Yesterday, went by La Diosa de Los Moles in Monterey Park. Located across the street from Resurrection Cemetery, it is located in a small strip mall with some interesting tenants. And, yes, that is within Monterey Park’s city limits, though it wouldn’t seem to be. Not to be a geography pedant, but someone needs to be :slightly_smiling_face:. This is Chef Rocio Camacho’s latest place, and it still proves with moles (to paraphrase the late, great Arthur Conley): “She’s the queen of them all, y’all.” Her other places received some love in the Chowhound days, and her Bell Gardens place has come up here, but I haven’t seen this location mentioned. There’s a build your own mole section. Choice of one of nine moles over one of nine proteins.

Wow, thank you so much for this! I had no idea she had a place in Monterey Park. I thought I had to drive to Bell Gardens to get manchamanteles, this is great news.

i liked what I had at Mish but we mostly got bagels and pastrami and blintzes. Kreplach was great too.

I’m of the belief there’s no such thing as a good black and white cookie, though. So not unexpected for those to be pretty shit.

(Also, am Jewish, grew up in NY - thought it was better than most places there)

Oh I’d just gone to the La Diosa de los Moles spot in Monterey Park too! Don’t sleep on the crema de flor de huitlacoche.

had some friends in town and did some eating:

KIM THAI FOOD in North Hollywood

iced teas:

Duck laab with pork cracklings.

Skewers (two chicken, three pork) & sticky rice.

Every bite was pretty fantastic. But that relish with the skewers really fantastic.

shoutout to @EattheWorldLA for writing about this a while back.

3 HE NOODLES in Temple City

I can’t remember who put us on to this. I think it came up in an SGV thread, or on @chandavkl’s IG? Either way, it’s nice to know about this spot. The ordering is done online, though you do get a physical menu. But they don’t totally align? We wanted the stir-fried wide noodles with beef, but ended up with cat ear noodles.

Cucumber salad.

Seaweed salad.

Spicy wontons.

Noodles with lamb.

Cat ear noodles with beef

SAM’S PLACE Highland Park

What a bar. I’d be here every night if it were in my neighborhood. Convivial. Buzzy. Comfortable. Tight menu. We got bread/butter, almonds, olives. Maybe three rounds of each. Got there right after open at 4, and the place was packed before 5. And was only getting busier when we left around 7.

ANGEL’S TJ TACOS in Eagle Rock

Great trompo. Always spinning. Always fresh. Handmade tortillas. I think Angel’s is as good as it gets. 6 tacos and a burrito (not pictured) set us back $35.

BARBACOA ESTILO XOCHITIOPAN E. 29th St., LA

Thanks to @sk8uno for putting this one on my list. Very calm atmosphere. Mostly families and older couples when we went at about 9:45am. Handmade tortillas. A very unctuous consommé.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BARBACOA y BIRRIA ESTILO TAXCO GUERRERO (maybe?) Paloma Ave. b/n Slauson and E. 56

Another @sk8uno rec. We went looking for this spot on McKinley, but didn’t see anything. Drove around the block and passed this tent (with very warm table service). The pictures on yelp align with the setup we found on Paloma Ave but the address is different. We got a mixed half-pound to follow up on the tacos we ate half an hour earlier at Xochitiopan. The mix was a mistake for me: there were some very gamey pieces. The tortillas were stellar. Maybe second only to Barbacoa Ramirez (but I haven’t been up there for over a year). Either way, great find.

CHUNG KIWA BBQ on Olympic.

We got the Combo #2 for $175, including a kimchi stew, soju. Throw in some rice and four Terra and I think this was $235 before tax. As a friend said, great food, bad value. Maybe I’m too price sensitive, but I can’t justify going out for KBBQ. Service was great. The banchan does not get replenished beyond some stewed greens and kimchi.

No pics:

El Chato on Olympic. Two cabeza tacos, a cabeza mulita, a carne asada taco. $13. Necessary after KBBQ. Pretty good.

Noodle Art at the Farmer’s Market. 3 dishes for $46 after tax. I forget about this spot, but it reaches almost the same highs as the closed MP location.

Quiadaiyn on Venice. Some breakfast dishes and cafes de olla. $90 after tax & tip. I like this spot a lot, but breakfast is not where they shine.

Did Little Fish Melrose Hill for lunch today. Steak salad was a Thai-vietnamese inspired delight. Their steelhead with grains and greens is lovely, if not a bit simple. Also, they have some the best fries in the city. Bay leaf straciatella ice cream with blackberries was great too.

I like the space and the service too. Waiters really know their stuff and the wine is good.

This is the right place! They had previously been on McKinley, but moved (a while ago) to Paloma. Google Maps has the right address, even though Yelp does not. Things change frequently with these street vendor operations and Yelp is pretty slow to update.

I’m with you on the mixta portions, btw. I find myself sticking to costilla, pierna, or cabeza these days. I’m glad you enjoyed both spots!

Great cross section of what makes LA one of the best places to eat! Glad to see some South LA

Kims definitely has some of the best laab and papaya salads

Angels might be the best taco chain
