Where to go? Do people still get up at the crack of dawn and go to San Pedro?
Back to the 1990s? The world’s fisheries are petering out. Basic laws of economics demand that prices go up when scarcity occurs.
Sorry to be the messenger bearing bad tidings… Try 99 Ranch Market.
Does 99 Ranch have anything remotely local? My Latino market in Reno doesn’t.
All of it is local. All from earth’s waters.
I am in Santa Cruz . We used to get fresh fish ( That is local caught Monterey Bay ) . It’s really hard to find at my local grocery . Used to be that you could go down to the harbor and buy a whole fish off the boat . Regulations and bureaucracy have put a end to this . I can only find local fish at the FM . It’s around $22.00 a pound depending of what they have . Still not much around . Even when I go out to the wharf for lunch . It is all frozen fish from Alaska or Canada . I can’t believe L.A. is any better .I would say most of it is flown in daily from another country . But nothing coming out of the ocean in front of you .
Hahaha.
It’s an exception to the rule, but there are some specialty companies that sell their own local catch.

A friend said Gulf Fish Market in the hood.
Y’all are so lucky.
A friend gave me the number of a guy who goes fishing and catches some. LOL.
update,
I called the guy he said he has red snapper he caught it on Sat. $8lb. Who’s going to try it? He says he has white fish and yellowtail too. The yellowtail is $15 per lb tho. I’m scared.
He said he doesn’t fry it anymore tho, only sells it raw.
Seeing is believing .
LA Fish Company in the Wholesale District, sadly not as good anymore since they got taken over by Santa Monica fish market.
If you don’t mind driving Pearson’s Port down in Newport Beach is a great place. They don’t have a website, but here is an article about them, FLOATING FISH MARKET IS QUITE A CATCH – Orange County Register.
In the Valley Fish-In-The-Village on Burbank just east of Whitsett is a good kosher source of fish. The Fish King in Glendale is another good place. Whole Foods has upped their seafood quality and often carries good fish ($1 oysters on Fridays). The Galleria Market in Glendale carries some exotic, although not local, items like skate wings and whole monkfish tails.
Any specific reasons you can give? Even though they are now owned by SMS they seem to still be operating similar to how there were prior.
Offerings less exciting, limited variety post acquisition.
