Um, I’m just curious…how many people were you with at Bavel? Because I am in awe of your ability to eat two entire (wonderful-looking) dinners back-to-back. It’s not something I aspire to, personally, but it’s lovely to live through vicariously!
Probably one porkybelly. Could do three meals if there was probangbanger there
no way one person is eating all that. lol.
I can personally attest to the eating capacity of @PorkyBelly and @Probangbanger ![]()
To answer the question, looks like PorkyBelly tagged 5 people, so there were 6 at Ki. Who knows how many could handle going to Bavel after ![]()
@PorkyBelly always doing the bangs lol! Looks like good eating!
Was there a few days ago too. Perilla leaf sorbet carried over from Kinn days and I’m here for it. Where did you guys get the cake from and what flavor?
Ki definitely deserved a star. One of the more memorable meals in LA after emerging from Covid hibernation. Creative menu, flavors were harmonious, technically precise cooking.
Highlights:
- Dungeness crab noods. I’m generally not a fan of dungeness crabs, I find their flavor relatively bland as a crab species. I’d pick blue crabs over dungeness any day of the week. However they managed to coax tons of crab flavor in this dish. I could have had few cups and noodle sergio in the hood was definitely a bonus.
- Octopus - never knew battered(?) octopus could be this texturally delicious.
- Duck
- Sable fish - skin was crispy as a thin sugar tuille
- Perilla leaf - bright & tart reminds me of Sei’s Haley salad.
- Potato
- Kimchi
Only negatives was the final dessert bingsu-eque course. Some of the granita like ice was a bit too chunky in mine. Resulting in too much hang time before the ice integrated with the flavor components, a personal pet peeve in shaved iced desserts. Terrible acoustic, can be challenging to catch all the details of the courses being described. The should hire some audio guy to dampen the room. They probably need to add some heavier starch/filler somewhere, I’m a fairly light diner and did think the menu could do with an additional course or two (despite the bonus cake round).
I burst out laughing when @PorkyBelly arrived with the cake, that was a lovely gesture and quite delicious too. Great time meeting FTC’ers and sharing some great sakes.
First time at Bavel too! It was great I got a chance to try so many dishes on my first visit. Enjoyed the bang-bang although admittedly I had to get carted out by a stretcher at the end. ![]()
Thanks for the invite @PorkyBelly
i had help from fellow amateur bang bangers @Sgee @SithLord and @butteredwaffles.
however, we’re no match for the professionals like @Probangbanger and @hungryhungryhippos.
Don’t sell yourself short @PorkyBelly you’re definitely a pro bang banger!
hoping mama kim’s mackerel makes an appearance at ki soon.
the vanilla sponge and buttercream with fresh strawberry cake was from pink cakes.
Mackerel dishes at Kinn were bangers. Can’t wait to try Ki in September m. Doing that and Lilo for mine and my wife’s birthdays respectively
i also thought Ki was very excellent. Great place to drink wine, eat great food, hang out with friends. Checks all my boxes
He was there😂
Is it me or does the menu somehow feel just like something is missing?
5 stars
We had not been here before. I would rank it about the second best restaurant in LA after Vespertine. Consistently brilliant food over the course of the whole meal.
what are your top 5-10 restaurants in LA currently?
Verspertine
Ki
Hayato
Somni
Providence
Melisse
Morihiro (based on sushi omakase at old location)
Mori Nozomi
Kaneyoshi
Meteora
Next 3: Kato, Baroo, Sushikodoro Miyama
Note: I have never been to Sushi Inaba or Corridor 109.
how would you rate spice/heat level on these dishes.
Heat level: 1 on a scale of 1 to 10.
