Restaurant surcharges & service charges: threat or menace?

Good service requires a good tip. It’s not the fault of the server who has nothing to do with the bill . It’s the owner . If you dont like it . Dont go there ever again. Simple.

Sure, I agree! Will probably limit my visits to Jon and Vinny’s and that restaurant group.

But it might be good to have regulation on this stuff. Restaurants can’t legally garner tips. But if service fees are something restaurants can disburse as they please, we’re in a different situation, and it’s not one that voting with your wallet aka the market will solve.

Every restaurant with a service charge should be this transparent.

Agree! I’m not against the service charges. Just be straight forward about it and don’t expect me to tip on top of 25% service fees.

Restaurants need to sort this out. I cannot stand all the variations of restaurants adding up-charges trying to cover the cost of paying their damn employees and this is my least favorite solution. In a perfect world they’d all go the Jerry Greenberg route where you hand over a cc and don’t even have to sign.

Previously Animal didn’t charge the 18% while J&V’s newer restaurants did, but I guess you’re right that it was inevitable. :smirk: Too bad about the chicken oysters! They were my favorite bite of the year. Hopefully it was a fluke. Got resys next week. Can’t wait!

I’m not eating at any of their places until they’re more transparent on the service charge.

i’m waiting for all the other charges to start showing up: water and power fee 5%; lease fee 8%; laundry service fee 1.5%; clean glass surcharge 2%; Math fee to add up extra charges 4.5%. Thank You For Coming In! :beers::clinking_glasses::sparkling_heart:

If one dines with a large party do they auto-gratuity on top of the auto-service charge?

In California, service charges get around the problem of tip distribution being regulated by the state. They might also be excluded from gross receipts, reducing payments to the landlord.

Most of our deliveries now include a destination or fuel charge. Prices are going up everywhere, but it seems like everyone is just shifting to various fees and charges.

Aome delivery services bait and switch, tell you it’s free or costs 99 cents or whatever, then tack on extra charges just before you click to submit your order.

Restaurants get a lot of angry customers if undisclosed additional charges show up on the bill after the meal is ordered.

Your link is behind a paywall, but I think J&V restaurants are about as transparent as you’ll get.

I guess the question is are they paying a living wage thanks to the new service charge? If so then that makes tipping less necessary? I dunno, I got a headache just dealing with the 4% charge (why not just do 5%?) at Bavel yesterday.

“100% goes toward wages” could mean the restaurant is lowering its costs. Are any of the hourly wages higher than at similar restaurants without service charges? Are any lower? Not transparent at all.
