SE Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Singapore) Recs

Singapore hawker markets were definitely the highlight of the trip. Went to Maxwell, Old Airport Rd and Lau Pa Sat. Needed a few Korean meals after the bland not spicy Bali meals.

Lau Pa Sat is known for satay alley. Had excellent Indian and chicken rice as well.

Had to try Tian Tian at Maxwell and some Turkish food.

Old Airport Rd is definitely the least touristy of the bunch. Cheong Fun and Roast Paradise were excellent. The oyster omelet and kway teow stand were unfortunately not open.

Korean was so necessary

Jumbo seafood dim sum hit the spot.

Thanks for the tips!
Gonna head this way in the fall for a few days. Will be based in Nusa Dua.
I’ll need some interesting things to do/eat while someone golfs.

Do some boat rides maybe or hang at the beach. Nusa dua is the land of large hotel resorts and is relatively isolated on the peninsula but it has direct access to denpasar where all the locals live via the Sea toll road.

In nusa dua proper I would recommend a place known for Babi guling (my favorite pork dish in the whole world!):

Babi guling sari dewi -I literally saw them bring in a pig and heard them slaughter it on-site :grimacing: kind of grim but also speaks to the freshness, “local”, whole animal, and the nose to tail butchering we Americans all rave about at restaurants in the states. Not every place cooks their Babi guling on site and fresh some do it in the morning and ferry it to restaurant locations, so this place is legit

Nasi ayam ibu oki - a chainlet that sells nasi ayam aka chicken rice

And nasi Banjarmasin mbok many for really good local nasi campur (mixed rice)

If you want to explore denpasar or other areas on the bukit please let me know and I can provide more recs.

Some food advice about indo and Bali specifically

  1. Bring pepto bismol, as of the last time I went they don’t seem to sell it and only sell charcoal pills for Bali belly and some other stuff but I find pepto works best for me if I ever get sick, although I’ve never gotten “Bali belly”
  2. Cooked foods/freshly cooked foods are the safest, high turnover is key due to a lack of refrigeration. Best time to eat is morning and midday otherwise you run the risk of food sitting out all day especially at nasi campur/nasi Padang type stalls. Typically if a place is not busy I won’t eat there. Even nice places run the risk so don’t assume nice equals safer unless you are in the most touristy of areas, I actually like a lot of the mom and pops/stalls because you can see the food prep.
  3. Balis food safety standards are pretty good compared to the rest of indonesia but pretty bad compared to the USA.
  4. Wash hands and wipes down your cutlery, if you don’t have to pay right away try not to. Sometimes vendors will handle your cash and then prepare food which is not optimal.
  5. Generally speaking ice is ok in Bali especially in the tourist areas as it is regulated by the gov but that changes as you move further north or west

Bali was a dream! The humidity and heat…was not. You know it’s something when even the people who live there say it’s been unbelievably hot. But I will say the mountains and lake region north of Ubud was terrific! 20 degrees cooler than Nusa Dua and super low humidity…our driver needed a fleece pullover, but we were loving it in our summerwear.

Our driver pretty much insisted on procuring most of the things we wanted or were interested in because he said that all vendors would give him the local rate, but if they saw us they’d add their own tourist tax.

Vargas up in the mountains treated us to the best mi goreng I have ever had. Made with instant ramen noodles but with a house made sauce, it was a great mid-morning snack. Lots of great umami flavor.

Babi Guling Sari Dewi is his favorite babi guling in Nusa Dua. And he picked us up an order for a snack. This roasted suckling pig was delicious! Moist and flavorful…it definitely was fresh and I loved the sambal sides that I used the crispy skin as a chip to scoop it up with. Delicious!

New Moon Cafe (Jimbaran) -

Our driver took us to dinner at New Moon Cafe on Jimbaran Beach. Sunset here is magical, and the grilled seafood dinner as the waves crash in was just perfect.

We got a dinner set where it included a whole fish, squid, shrimp, prawns and clams. We added some garlic greens, fries and rice. The meal came with garlic sauce and their house sambal…it’s spicy, but it’s good! It was just a solid meal in paradise with a Radler Bintang. We were having such a good time, photos were not taken.

They had plenty of entertainment on the beach…the restaurant had stage for dancers and singers and various restaurants shoot off fireworks throughout the night.

I wish we had more time to try out @hungryhungryhippos recs, but I will say that we heeded your tips well and avoided Bali belly. Thank you!
We ended up spending quite a bit of time at our resort since we just wanted to slow down after our adventures in Japan. We loved Bali and are excited to return.

Koral Restaurant (Nusa Dua) -

More than a few coworkers suggested we hit up Koral since it’s located at our resort. Am I going to get suckered into an underwater/aquarium restaurant? Yes, I am!

They attempt at fine dining with lots of presentation flourishes and the wine list is pretty decent. But you come for the views. The views:

The menu:

The food (random order):

This one is a one a done for us like the Napa Valley Wine train. Are we glad we did it? Yes. Did we have a good time? Yes. But we wouldn’t do it again. There are my other places to eat in Bali…and at this resort.

Where else did you end up exploring on Bali? @attran99

Our driver took us to a coffee farm (luwak for an extra fee) and to Junglegold Chocolate on the way back to Nusa Dua from the Handara region.

After going hard in Japan, that was all the touristing we had in us left. We spent a fair amount of our time at the resort since they had plenty of amenities…making arrangements at Potato Head or Finn’s was a hassle for the time we had left so we skipped that this time, too.

Non-food recommendations:

  • We received a tip from a coworker…La Nusa Dua Spa. $25 USD for an excellent 90 minute massage…sign me up! Did it multiple times before leaving town.
  • Golfing: (I did not partake, but recs from Indonesian coworkers) Handara & New Kuta. The spouse preferred Handara to New Kuta, but they offer different vibes and different atmospheres/ecosystems. Cool mountain air vs mid-day sweltering, humid heat.
  • Gojek services can deliver warung to your hotel (didn’t have time to do this since we had access to food all the time)
  • Our driver was a cool dude and super reasonable. We found him via TripAdvisor and booked him via WhatsApp for about $43 USD per day (inclusive of petrol, parking fees, cold water).

That is a great rec for a massage I will book mark that if I am ever near Nusa Dua again!

Glad you guys skipped this unless you are a 20 something that’s a hard pass plus the traffic up and down the bukit peninsula up to legian or canggu area could take upwards of an hour/two hours or more each way by car.
