How much have the prices gone up? Lol
I’m taking my mom on Sunday for her birthday! Really looking forward to it
Roasted chicken watch was in full effect last night: $39. I don’t recall what the last update on that was here.
Hope she and you have a good experience! Just as an FYI, our end of the bar was pretty packed all around, and the main part of the dining room also looked pretty crowded (if your mom has mobility issues). It’s also fairly loud.
Also, there were some service hiccups (we had to ask for utensils, and our server put down a clean plate… and then took it back w/ the rest of the dirty plates).
I thought service was quite good otherwise, and any issues did not detract from our enjoyment of the meal.
Unrelated: had intended to go to Tran Coffee for lunch today. The menu on the counter and the menu behind the cashier have slightly diff prices; the banh mi are btw $8–9, not $7-8, as I had written earlier. Tran had a sign up saying they were closed b/c they are opening an Old-Town Pasadena location.
We noticed Pizza Fling next door literally just started serving slices….
One of the (I assume) co-owners asked us how it was (in terms of temp and crunchiness of the crust) since we were among the first people to try it. VERY hot (temp wise). The cornichone was nicely crispy; the part under the toppings wasn’t. I’m not sure if he had hoped all of the crust would be cripsy all the way along the slice; I thought it was fine the way it was.
The crust is noticeably thicker than the thin was had last wk (not sure how it compares to the “regular” thickness of a pie). $5 for the cheese, $6 for any slice w/ a topping.
Pretty tasty. A bit smaller than a square slice from Prime but also (a lot) less heavy, and partner thought less acidic in the sauce.
Last night: We went to ALTO - Studio City. (A detailed post in the thread). Hell yeah!
Friday night: My first time at Sri Siam in North Hollywood. Crispy trout. Crispy rice salad. Hell yeah! Who has had the special menu written in Thai by the cash register?
One of the best things I’ve ever had, I think.
Had a great time! We got the 60$ 4 course tasting menu and i added the wine pairing at 40 and though it was a great deal. The French Sommelier was personable even though they were busy. I’d probably add maybe the pommes dauphine to share next time just to fill up a bit more but I’ll be back.
Found the Yeastie Boys truck on Melrose, and decided to try it again. It’s an interesting bagel, though I feel it is way lighter than a traditional bagel. Dare I say the bagel felt fluffy? If you like cheese, the cheddar bagel is for you.
Tamales Liliana’s for a mix of tamales to go. Rojo, verde, chicken with vegetables and elote. The rojo pork was oddly dry. The verde pork fared slightly better, but not by much…there was a nice bit of heat from the sauce. I was told the chicken with vegetables was a little more moist. The elote was the most moist and fluffy, but rather than relying on the corn to be sweet, I felt there was sugary. Masa for the savory tamales was a touch more dense than I prefer, but it was seasoned…which was nice. I am not entirely sure this place belongs on the best tamales in the city lists.
September hits:
KinKan. Took my wife for her birthday and was blown away. The food was delicious with the stand outs being the chawanmushi followed by the tuna hambagu. Chef Nan lit up the room alongside Hieu her sake lead.
Jerusalem Chicken. 2.5 meals in a single togo box. The seasoned vermicelli rice is great. Spicy hummus will clear the sinuses, I wish online ordering allowed for the 1/2 spicy 1/2 regular hummus combo that online reviewers say they like to do.
Thunderbolt. Fun drink menu. One of the best biscuits I’ve ever had. Pimento cheese poppers needed to sit for a minute since the centers were still frozen after the fry.
Softie’s Breakfast. They use tortillas from Mejorado so they’re starting strong. Got both the pastrami and the bacon burritos, both solid. Salsa could use tweaking, there was something floral/herbal to it that threw me off.
Picalilli. Great happy hour, fortunate to sit at the triangle table in the middle with just two of us. I’d probably pass on the brussel sprouts next time and maybe ask for more heat on the larb.
September misses:
Baby Bistro. Menu was confusing and I didn’t feel like we got our money’s worth. A few dishes need tweaking (spaghetti squash, ankimo) and one needed better execution (pork belly). Onion bread, prawns, pine nut cookie were good.
Luv2Eat. Second time here affirmed that the Moo Ping is the best dish on the menu by far. Moo Ping was served lukewarm and it was still much better than the other dishes we got (Jade noodle, pad kapi).
Costco Pizza. I phoned whole pie orders in for 10:45 and still needed to wait until 11:05 with my pizza.
Welcome to FTC!!!
Stopped by for the Grilled Pork Banh Mi at Tran. No 1,000 Island. Decent enough for WLA. Bread was not crispy enough and the veggies were scant-ish.
Really enjoyed the “complimentary” cup of Vietnamese iced coffee
And got an up close view of the new
Pizza Fling Slices
Welcome! Great rundown!
Softie’s Breakfast. They use tortillas from Mejorado
YES! And they just announced they are using the tortillas to also make Cesar Wraps and Bacon Salad Wraps! I haven’t had a chance to try them yet, but I LOVE their Cesar Salad.
Also their Chopped Cheese is so ridiculous. Best one I’ve had in L.A.
So glad they opened up! And equally as glad the University is no longer screening at the gate. The Gates are still up, but you can just walk through, which makes visiting Softies (and Terra Mia who has a super good house made meatball sub!) easier for when you are visiting the park or going to a game.
Welcome to FTC @milkandcyril.
Okay. I finally had a chance to pop by after a Trader Joe’s run and pick up Softie’s Ceasar Wrap.
AMAZING!
The thing I really love about Softie’s Caesar is that it includes radicchio. I love it for how it adds such a freshing sharpness to the salad in addition to creamy dressing. The dressing is house made with plenty of parm and a hint of dijon. It goes so well with the crispy chicken and toasted bread crumbs. I love a great crouton in a salad but for Ceasar wraps they either get super soggy or tear up your mouth. The crumbs stay crunchy.
Now the real star… the Mejorado tortilla.
omg! It’s so thin and rich. It holds everything together so well and this wrap is one chonk!
One thing to note… the breakfast burritos are on the menu board. The wrap is not. But you can just ask for it, it’s in the POS and is $14. So worth it.
Stay A-round donuts at the farmers market in Walla Walla, WA - super soft and chewy and you get a slight crunch from the icing, the donut melts in your mouth wowza
I think the Ggiata Chicken Ceasar wrap is on a Mejorado tortilla too. How does this compare?
Marden’s Chicken Rice + Broth & Vegetables + Calamansi Pie w/Gula Melaka Graham Cracker Crust, Pandan Whipped Cream
Finally got myself over to Sawtelle for Simon Tan’s chicken-y deliciousness! ![]()
Nostalgia
We said farewell to the 117 year old restaurant w/cocktails & beef, lamb & pastrami dips.
Ladies Who Lunch, Lunch
Aragosta - Lobster Salad w/Bell Peppers, Arugula, Corn, Tomato, Onion, Cucumber, Mustard Dressing
PLANTA Cocina (Vegan) - Marina Del Rey
Classic Burger - Beans, Lentils, Mushroom Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles, Onion, Secret Sauce. Croquetas - Mushroom Bacon, Cashew Mozzarella, Aioli, Cilantro
Guacamole w/Pico de Gallo & Sikil Pak
The thing I like about Planta (besides the pleasant atmosphere) is they actually use vegetables, fruits, grains & legumes to make the food - not a lot of over-processed soy products manipulated into faux meat. You won’t find Impossible meat here.
Rodeo 72 Public Market - Whittier
Capo Public House
Lady in Pink - Vodka, Strawberry Purée, Lemon, Egg Whites. CDMX - Makers Mark, Aztec & Angostura Bitters, Averna

A bacon wrapped cheese dog for hubs. One day I’m gonna eat one of these things.
Happy Eating!
@TheCookie ghetto dogs are so good you have to try one soon! I always do ketchup mayo and mustard
That’s exactly how I’m gonna have it… when I have it! ![]()
I haven’t tried theirs. The first few times I went, all of their sandwiches were oddly spicy (Even the the non-spicy ones) and I didn’t order it because I think they add pepperoncini to their wraps, which I am not a fan of because vinegar messes with creamy dressing… But if you think it’s worth a shot, I am always willing to do a compare!
Including wonderful Sushi. I believe they also have a happy hour!
