September 2026 Rundown

Had you not identified that as pastrami, I never would’ve guessed. Holy cow…

New congee contender on the Westside! Cafe Franca (Sawtelle, next to Tuk Tuk) serves up a surprisingly satisfying bowl, with a light broth, chicken, fried garlic, scallions, all topped with a soft egg…

@theplankt Sorry for the delay. I’ll second the Hilsha, with the caveat @PeonyWarrior gave (it is bony). Really, any of the fish curries are good for Bangladeshi/Bengali cuisine. Veggie wise, I too love Karela (Bitter Melon), though I know it isn’t for everyone. @PeonyWarrior is right, wow!, Aladin has really added to their menu.

When I made my rounds in Little Bangladesh, I had the fellow at one steam table place tell me: “No fish for you! Too many bones.” Moments later we bonded and had a nice chat over my veggie choice of bitter melon (though he still didn’t give me the fish :slightly_smiling_face:)

No worries! I still haven’t made it out there yet, so it’s great to gather intel  Interesting on the bitter melon. I’ve only had chinese bitter melon, but I’m interested in how they’ll prepare it. Yes, their menu looks quite expansive!!

Yah pastrami wit the pate and aioli does something special incredibly tasty. The full pound version is too much pastrami flavor IMO and takes away from the other flavors.

For context, 1/2 vs full pound.

1/2 pound

Full pound

Yakitoriguy’s yakitori is really good and educational. It’s a 6 person dinner and you can see all the cooking. You end up eating half a chicken plus shime and dessert. So around 14 courses for $175. He does it 3 days a week with 1 seating a night. It does take 3 1/2 to 4 hours. It’s BYOB so no corkage. Highlights for me were the chicken breast, chicken heart, and chicken skin. You can get bonus rounds and I got 3 additional skewers. I got kidney, lymph node, and belly. The kidney and lymph node was excellent. I haven’t had a lot of Yakitori experiences but this has been the best one so far for me.

Which restaurant did you go to in popotla? La Estrella?

Seriously the best turon! I’ve had my fair share of potlucks that almost always had turon and Pampanga is the best I ever had! Stays pretty crispy. Don’t know how it is up in Daly City but I can’t imagine a better turon in LA and CA

Second this. Favorite yakitori in L.A. right now.

Can’t wait for the fall menu!

Awesome thanks! I’ve always wanted to try the box crab at popotla

Hell yeah, and eat it with some Magnolia’s macapuno ice cream.

Nice did you buy it at the restaurant or from a fish monger and have them prepare it?

how much was it?

Got it there at the restaurant, it was about 80ish if I recall correctly, ~10 lbs. Cracking it with a big rock was surprisingly easy and fun for the kids
