First of all, the policy technically bans all headwear, not just backwards hats. They told me to turn my hat around, not to take it off, so that already is contrary to their policy. And they didn’t mention that my athletic wear was also violative.
Second, even tonight, looking around, there were plenty of people wearing hats, a couple people in sweats, and a couple people in flip flops. None of them were told anything.
Third, I’ve been to R&D Kitchen hundreds of times. That’s not an exaggeration, by the way, as I’ve gone once a week for lunch for years, in addition to many dinners. I’ve worn athletic wear a handful of times, hats many times (usually for lunch), tanktops once or twice - a specific instance comes to mind where I wore a tanktop for easy access prior to getting covid/flu vaccines and then went to R&D Kitchen for lunch, sweatpants plenty of times, and flip flops probably the majority of 100+ lunches. Never once has anyone said anything.
And for the record, I had no clue there was a dress code at all until tonight. I have not been purposefully violating the R+D Kitchen dress code for nearly 20 years.
Bestia (DTLA): all the classics (scallop crudo, margherita pizza, roasted marrow bone spinach gnocchetti, cavatelli alla norcina, donuts & ice cream) … the pizza here is not really mentioned online, social media, etc, but damn its one of the best in the city imo
The lot in Newport are pretty casual for lunch and early dinner. I see hats and athletic-wear all the time. Not knowing the policy, I admit that I’ve been non-compliant at Hillstone the entire time I’ve been going there…and have never seen anyone get called out for it.
It sounds like selective enforcement…which is utter nonsense to me. Either enforce it at all times or let it go.

If there is a better zhoug in Los Angeles, I don’t know it. Makes all the “premium” supermarket ones I have tried pale in comparison. Lots of uses, including accompaniment to morning eggs. I also like to snack on Quest high protein chips, but unfortunately bought a flavor I don’t like – Pizza flavor – because that flavor was discounted on Amazon and the other flavors I enjoy more were not. Solved the problem with Haifa zhoug - dig the chip in zhoug and the pizza taste shirks – the stronger flavor survives and it is the green zhoug. Long live zhoug – name all your local favorites.
As I was leaving Haifa, I saw an influencer from Chicago come in to make a video. So I almost met a minor celebrity of sorts. Later I watched his Haifa video and I saw he liked the zhoug as well. He also ordered Moroccan cigars which I had never considered ordering. Maybe next time but Haifa’s main job is to keep me stocked in zhoug at home.
Ate here last night. Part of our reg. rotation. We love it and have been going for 5 yrs now. I actually don’t mind the paper since we usually bring home left overs.
I hit Briciola in Silver Lake a day or two after they opened in early/mid-September. A write-up of it in Eater today reminded me to post this. Short rib frites (meat is great, tender but not fatty) and carrots with farofa. This whipped cassava accompanying the carrots was a big hit. My partner got a plate of large prawns that she was quite happy with.
