South Bay Staples

Betty Market and Restaurant in Inglewood. Ethiopian. Kategna with Cheese, berere, Ethiopian clarified butter. Snappy spicy, sour, and a bit of sweets. Vegetable Combo, a cornucopia of flavors. “Samosa in the background”

Harrietts Cheesecakes is next door. We bought a Praline Cheesecake and ate at Betty’s Market.

Just poke was really good today. Although their rice was over cooked which blew my mind since they have such high turnover. Line was out of control.

Tempura tendon at mitsuwa. The frying has gotten much much better. Back to opening days glad they were able to stabilize and recalibrate after such a bad dip in quality

Gaburi chicken.

Great juicy fried chicken and excellent cucumber and potato salad.

Dan Dan mian was not bad. Maybe this is a misunderstanding on my part but I’ve never seen such a soupy dan dan mian have japanese restaurantsmisappropriated the meaning? It was quite odd especially since the description did not mention any soup or broth. Would’ve gotten chicken ramen had I known.

Gaburi is just one of those places I don’t get… I should love it. I love fried chicken, I love roast chicken, I love roasted and fried chicken (like at 3355 Asian Grill.) But the fried chicken here has this weird coating that isn’t crunchy and is kind of gooey almost, imo. And the roast chicken leg always feels a little bit undercooked. And the skin is sort of flaccid. Although both versions are juicy.

I will say the chicken ramen is decent tho.

I like their fried chicken more than their roast chicken. But to each their own! I also like their fries and assortment of sauces.

A gigantic burrito from Flores meat market in Wilmington they have meats from the plancha, carnitas, and guisadas. I got the chile verde pork mixed with chicharron. Pork was a little tough probably over fried. Next time I’m gonna get the stewed beef. Also got these crack candies so sour

That’s the Japanese style. Killer Noodle on Sawtelle has the same style

Thanks for the info seems like they misnamed it lol

I haven’t tried the fries - I will have to do that next time, since my kids love the place.

I think I just prefer the satisfying crunch of Korean FC more!

Finally made it to Lunada Creamery… The soft serve sits in between ice cream and gelato… Very creamy, like gelato, but more dense, like ice cream. Had the strawberry and chocolate. Both were very good. Will definitely be back! The owner is a local and it would be awesome to see her succeed! The frozen treat in Southbay with Golden Spoon, Neptune, Lunada Creamery, Wanderlust, and Ugo (can’t remember if there is someone I’m forgetting) is absolute fire these days!

this isn’t exactly “South Bay.” i was born and bred in Torrance. now i live near here, so Tak’s Coffee Shop hits pretty close to home for me.

same plaza as Earle’s and the upcoming Apollonia’s expansion–right off the Crenshaw Expo station. i didn’t know this block used to be heavily Japanese-American, but i’ve batted an eye at the Googie Starbucks every time i drive by; the previously attached bowling alley is now a Walgreens.

it’s an authentic old-school diner with some Hawaiian options like loco moco or saimin. the food isn’t life changing, but it’s solid for the price. the loco moco (~$20) is no TNT Aloha, but the gravy is very good and obviously homemade. the saimin and pork noodles always arrive overcooked, but the broth is righteous–and one of the handful of places you can, authentically, get hot mustard on the side. also for the price ($11 as of this post), you can cook my noodles however the fuck you want.

i would argue that it edges out Gardena Bowl (literally same concept), but i couldn’t tell you if it’s worth driving 30+min for. it is absolutely worth supporting as a local staple, though, if you’re near the area.

the FOH actually gives a shit and remembers every single one of her customers and their orders. she is the sweetest and kindest lady

Yeah, my mom basically grew up in the Holiday Bowl cause my grandparents were always there. I will stop by Tak’s if I’m in the area for the saimin or Portuguese sausage/chashu and eggs.

I had taks once and really enjoyed it but Gardena bowl is def closer for me.

Lunch bang bang

I’m really loving bread head roast beef, top tier bread with great ingredients and balance of flavors.

Redwood pie margherita so good. Has totally replaced prime as my go to.

I live within bike distance and love to go to Taks for breakfast. It definitely had old time vibes. Another gem in that center is Kim’s Chinese. The best old skool Chinese in town IMHO. Their egg foo youngs are a must have and they do pan fried noodles that I always just have.

But I was in MB yesterday and also had Breadhead for the first time. I loved but it was wierd. Not sure if it was because it was late in the day (almost 8p) or if it was topped with cold items, but the top of my Cuban was cold. Still I really liked it and would come back to try the Ruben.

Two places I have on my list that I hope maybe some reports back before I hit them …. Someone on Reddit gave a glowing report to Tonkatsu Marushichi. Also there is new 3-Way Beef pop up that is hitting breweries in the South Bay.

I did not love my marusichi experience but it was the first week, tonkatsu was over cooked in both sandwich and bento

yeah I would expect a Cuban to be hot all the way through, but maybe they don’t warm the breads or press them at bread head?

Anyone know where to get fresh baked pita or flatbread in South Bay?

does Jon’s market sell that stuff?

Jons does have it, but I don’t think they make it in house. Whole Foods sells Angel Pita. It’s that small Pita, very fluffy.
