Back when I was in my 20s and 30s and even into my 40s, I’d walk for long distances in SF in high heels. After the '89 earthquake I walked over a mile - after catching a ride for part of the way - to get home. We all discovered that walking up Nob Hill in high heels was easier than flats cause the heels evened out the hill somewhat 
The things we do to look pretty… 
Men make the effort also.

I do tend to date women who prefer a cute pair of flats to strappy stilettos. But I’ve been known to make an exception for the right lady. 
The last woman I dated who wore heels all the time was willing to schlep a mile+ for a good taco.
