Yangban Society

I realize DineLA is basically over and we did this right as it started, but the menu price difference was only $5 so if you’re interested in probably the best way to experience Yangban Society (at least the best I’ve had to date) then chef’s menu during dinner is the move.

The entire table needs to participate to get the dinner menu, all of which is served family style.

Cured Hamachi, Aged Soy, Sesame

A pretty great bite—and to be honest a dish that I originally thought this restaurant would be more of, but it’s also something you could get throwing a rock in any direction here in LA.

Hot Smoked Trout Schmear, Caviar (supplement), Griddled Potato Bread, Deli Pickles, Danmuji Pickles

The schmear is pretty intense and rich dish on its own, but necessary with potato bread. Honestly, you can skip the caviar, save it for Asterid, but the schmear+bread+caviar is actually a pretty fantastic bite.

The Danmuji pickles win the head-to-head bout.

Coal Roasted Cabbage and Oro Blanco Slaw

The cabbage is solid and actually something I order nearly every time because it feels semi-healthy.

Chilled Dotori Acorn Noodles, Pea Shoot and Chive Salad

Two dishes I’ve never had out of the case before and both were surprisingly good—the noodles especially.

Biscuit and Kare Gravy

The best thing on the menu.

Soy Braised Chicken Thighs

Aggressively fine.

Soy Garlic Wings (supplement)

Large and hearty wings that came out piping hot. Turns out—after eating a lot of wings for some reason in the past few weeks—these were my favorite among them.

Bonus—add leftover caviar.

I enjoyed my meal at yangban society but for it to be a top new restaurant is suprising.

Did Bon Appétit move that article behind the paywall after I read it this morning? I can’t see it any more.

I think the selection is as much about how the restaurants change up business as usual as it is about the food (which still has to be first-rate).

no

I can see it again. Weird.

from 23:00 to ~ 33, they talk about Yangban

Peony: It’s a cute neighborhood Korean food restaurant. I find the food decent but not impressive.

Warrior: Not bad. Not great. Gourmet food for recent college graduates. 3.3 Warrior Points.

THe matzoh ball soup is really good.

There were some things I thought were good: the biscuit and tater tots were tasty (these must have come with other dishes because we didn’t order them). The spiny lobster was a quality ingredient. But I saw little positive in the avocado and pear salad, the acorn noodles, the scallion kimchi, or the millet rice. The millet rice ($9???) is possibly the worst QPR rice I’ve ever had. If it were free I still would have thought it sucked (too mushy). The fried tofu was okay but a poor QPR at $30. Overall, I think the restaurant would be a cute, quirky find at half the price but is poor at the actual price.

The press sure loves these guys.

This is unfairly dismissive, especially if you don’t eat, what, three quarters of the menu. For now I will leave it at that…

@robert It seems plain to me why they get press. The narrative of the restaurant is interesting and fits the moment: chefs interpreting/hybridizing? a specific, canonical cuisine through their personal experiences.

Anyone been for dinner recently? Any thoughts? Are they doing table service or do you go to the food and drink station to order?

a month ago, table service but order through QR. Don’t make the mistake I did of putting in your order all at once, they did NOT course it and we had 10 dishes on our table in 5 minutes.

Wow that sounds miserable and something that they should warn you about especially at the price points they are charging. Thanks for the heads up.
