Where can I buy non-canned Thai curry paste? Like freshly pok pok by a Thai auntie. Anywhere in Thai Town or the SFV?
Check the cold case right by the parking garage entrance at Silom Supermarket on Hollywood.
Thank you!
I’ll try and make some curry rice with my new farmers market find
Does jarred count as not canned?
She’s in the Sherman Oaks Farmer’s Market (among others):
If you’re near Chinatown or the northeast, LAX-C, aka thai Costco, has a great food court that sells legit thai food and pantry staples including homemade curry pastes. Be prepared, most items are written in Thai. Workers are always willing to help. Also, grab a fresh Timbo Pils at HPB down the street. Cheers!
Welcome to FTC!!!
Google translate does a decent job with the printed labels in the deli case. Like, it won’t tell you the name of the paste but it’ll let you know the ingredients
Luv2 Eat’s lunch curry spot is opening!
That looks so awesome!
That looks AMAZING.
Their boat noodle soups and sausages are great.
Never tried anything else from them.
yeah, the place seemed legit. there was even a reserved table for lunch, demonstrating its popularity. it’s probably one of those instances where i went wrong by picking the least meaty option on the menu.
Beyond @EattheWorldLA, this place is fairly slept on. Probably a bit too intense, but would love to see this and Pailin feel the Ruen Pair effect and crossover. Speaks to the depth of Thai food here.
I don’t know if the same thing is happening here but my young cool hip niece told me that reservations at Thai restaurants in NYC are difficult to obtain because of White Lotus. She said she knows lots of people who are going to Thai restaurants due to the show.
Ugh love a good tom saap. Might have to try this spot.
I had the worst meal recently at Jitlada.
The plan was to go to Hollywood Thai (another place I have not been to ages) but they were closed for a remodel. So we decided to brave the wait (which was only about 20 mins) and see how Jitalda was, after not going for 10-ish years. Notoriety, and “City of Gold,” may have treated Jazz and her team well, but not me. It wasn’t anything like I recalled.
Spicy dishes were not spicy at all. Even a special called spicy wings, or something like that, was like ketchup on poorly cooked wings.
Pad Thai was goopy, super-sweet and mushy.
Whole fish was over cooked and dry.
A table of Italian’s on vacation in LA were next to us. They sent their the pad thai back, and commented “How can this be the best Thai restaurant in Los Angles?”
It made me feel bad for the Italians, and made me recall (sadly) all the times I have been in a city I don’t know well, gone to a “once famous” place, and been ripped off.
