2025: Best Dish(es)

Inspo’d by Air Jordan podcast’s recent end-of-year episode, what was/were your best dish(es) of 2025?

I have two/three.

  1. Veal sweetbreads, eel, and peas at Vin Mon Lapin (July 2025)

  1. “Shimp Swan Crispy,” Shanghai, CN

Can’t remember the restaurant, but this was from my trip to Shanghai in April. Met up with Mom’s old school friends; drank a North Korean wine; ate an incredible meal.

  1. Sweet hot soy milk; cruller; fan tuan (w/ cruller); fried rice cake, Shanghai, CN

Perhaps for the better part of a decade I was dreaming of eating a local Shanghainese breakfast again and I’m so happy that this place near Dong Hu hotel in the former French Concession satsified it. Replete with locals rolling through in slippers, a no-nonsense auntie owner, and excellent cruller.

Can’t wait to see yours!

great thread idea, but i think this would probably get more visibility / traction in the Los Angeles section, where more traffic seems to be concentrated. with that said, like your guys’ dishes, my best from this year were from outside of California.

Saison uni toast comes to mind.

Some of us don’t live in southern California. :slightly_smiling_face:

I haven’t dined in Los Angeles since 2014. I haven’t visited the States since October 2019.

Most of this board lives in or around Los Angeles so it is kind of considered the “default” thread in a way. Sometimes used for more general posts like this to get more participation

The monthly rundowns like “December 2025 Rundown” is posted on the LA thread but is generally welcome to any and all posts, no matter where you are

That said, your posts are awesome. I’m gonna try one of those Fèves au Lard recipes soon

good to know re: general topics being posted on the LA board to get more participation, thank you

and thanks for the compliment!

I’ve posted non-LA food from time to time and been criticized by Ciao bob among others. So ymmv.

Maybe @robert can weigh in but as far as I know it’s okay by the mods which is all that matters. There’s NYC and Hawaii posts in the current rundown

while I never put my travel eats in the LA monthly rundowns, I suggested moving this thread to the LA category because I think a year-end retrospective is a bit different and figured that some posters might have had memorable experiences in LA to share. It would be nice to see more sharing of bests in this thread but I understand of course if it’s best in Non-Regional

The monthly rundown topics on the LA board are not LA-specific. People seem to want to do that so I don’t move posts, though personally I’d rather see posts in the most relevant boards / topics.

Both were memorable, the oden for its dashi (custom made in-house), and the soup for the excellent texture of its noodles.

Rice Thief looks interesting. I can’t find any other posts about it here. Long Island City?

Here’s a thread I started, discussing my three visits (one was a visit from them to me) over the past couple of years. And yes, LIC, a short walk from the 39th Ave. N stop.

love this idea.
