A Taco Journey: Carne Asada, Al Pastor, Pacific Spiny Lobster, and more - Leo's Tacos #2, Tire Shop Tacos, Revolutionario, Ricky's Fish Tacos, Guerrilla, BS Taqueria and more!

Great read . I love hearing of people’s success. He should drive the truck to Baja. Serve his tacos on occasions to family and friends. That’s his baby.

How Sergio-dependent is it for this business model to succeed? 'Cuz in this case, Sergio is retiring.

he’s selling the recipe for the batter as well as ‘consulting time’ to allow the new owner to come up to speed, but the new owner will need to have reliable sources to obtain el rosal flour, not to mention lard specifically from baja.

Anyone been lately? My last time was over a year ago, and the tacos definitely went downhill, as others have mentioned here. But I’d go again before Ricky sells, just on the off-chance it’s close to what it was before. After he moved from the patio/outside location to a truck, it hasn’t been the same.

A downhill RFT is still way better than most. IMO.

I went last week. Sure it’s maybe not as totally unimpeachable as before, but it’s pretty damn close to my palate. And as @Ns1 said, a bad day at Ricky’s is better than a good day almost anywhere else.

Good to know, I should head out there soon!

I didn’t know where to put this but all of a sudden I’m really craving carnitas and carne asada tacos. The headline of the article from LA Taco

My phone recommended a place to me. Voice to text on the iPhone is quite a challenge.

I passed a place called Tacos Hell Yeah, and was amused enough to text wifey. So the phone types Tacos Gallazo. Of course it does. So close, they do almost sound the same.

Tacos Gallazo? I looked it up, they do exist.

Can anyone concur with my crApple phone?

Oh this reminds me, and I am not sure of the specifics, but a week or so ago, I turned south on Hooper from Olympic and there was a truck emblazoned with their Taqueria San Miguel logo and “formerly known as Tire Shop Taqueria.” Anyone been to that?

I am so confused about this.

Tire Shop Taqueria is really Taqueria San Miguel, but Tire Shop shows on Yelp as being on Avalon and San Miguel on Hooper…

And Tire Shop AM is on Compton Ave but is known as… ?

I’ve never been to Tire Shop (aka San Miguel) AM or PM, but they’re on my list so I’ve done a little research.

My understanding (could be wrong so please correct me) is:

  1. Avalon is the PM location
  2. Hooper is the AM location. Compton (the street of the Smart and Final that’s next to AM) is basically the same place as Hooper

Went to the AM location on Sunday thanks to this thread no line had two asada tacos and a quesadilla. Not sure the story behind the two locations but they definitely share the same banner menu at least according to Yelp photos of the PM tire shop.

The flavor was the same as tire shop PM, smoky juicy asada with plentiful guac so even if they aren’t related they’re close enough for me to visit when I’m in the area for a day time taco.

Also fyi it’s behind the smart and final, it looks like a Mexican supply warehouse next door.

Yes this is to my knowledge correct. And the lonchera I saw was parked on Hooper near the AM location. I was moving so I did not see whether it was operating or just dropping off supplies or what. It had the full mural painting treatment so it looked like their next phase. It was a Saturday close to 4:30pm.

Finally tried La Autentica Birrieria (or L.A Autentica according to their social media handles), and I loved everything. Wonder what else AD recommends!

Got a mix of dorados (crispy), suaves (soft), and quesatacos and tried both birria de chivo and de res. La Unica has been my #1 for birria tacos, but this is a close 1A. Both meats were tender and juicy, which is especially impressive when many of the birria de res specialists don’t even get their beef as tender. The La Unica chivo is gamier, while La Autentica’s is more mild - I like the gaminess of goat, so that’s prob why I give the slight edge to Unica.

Consome is great, milder as well but full of meaty flavor. Salsas are all solid, especially their aceite. Folks working there couldn’t be sweeter. Parking is super easy in the community center lot or on the street.

In the pic, there are 2 dorados de chivo and 2 quesatacos de res - they prob look the same given that they’re all griddled and crispy.
