A week of lunch adventures

My girlfriend has the week off of work (only in the entertainment industry…) so we want to fill up the week with a series of lunch excursions. We live west of the 405, so traffic keeps us close to home most weeknights. This is the perfect opportunity to venture further from home and enjoy a sampling of the best that greater LA has to offer.

Having family, and having gone to college, back East, one of her favorite foods is a good old fashioned lobster roll. Where can we get the absolute best lobster roll in the greater LA area? Our current favorite is Broad Street - any superior options out there?

Ideally we want a different cuisine each day. As mentioned, we are willing to travel far and wide as the goal here is to experience the best of the best. We will drive an extra 30 minutes to dine at the best place rather than the second best. Weekday lunch can be a little tricky and limits the options somewhat, hence the call for suggestions. Some other general ideas (but we are not wed to any of these)

  • Best dim sum
  • Best classic Mexican
  • Open to all other cuisines without restriction

Where should we go?

Shortlist

(1) Mandatory lobster roll day
Consensus seems to be Royal Lobster
Unfortunately, I think this is going to cover the broader seafood category - so probably knocks Mariscos, Holbox, Daybird, etc out of the running

(2) “BBQ”
Langer’s by a hair over Moo’s (I love both dearly)

(3) Chinese / Dim sum
Yang’s Kitchen or Sea Harbour/Lunasia

(4) Thai
Holy Basil (clear consensus of HB over Luv2eat)

(5) “Grilled meats” (Armenian, Turkish, Greek, Persian, general Middle Eastern…I know many of these cuisines are very different, just doing my best to categorize somewhat)
Mini Kabob bang bang / b2b Hamlet’s Kitchen

(Saffy’s DQd since we’ve already been)

We want to try new places (aside from Langer’s which is a re-visit), so probably skipping pizza/Italian as we’ve been to most or all of the top places in LA.

I love this idea!

I remember folks saying Royal Lobster LA being very solid.

For dim sum, come out to SGV for Sea Harbour. While you are at it, you could check out places like Yang’s Kitchen, Fosselman’s and Ruby BBQ.

I’d highly recommend a trip to Little Saigon for day to bounce around and try different dishes. There is a fair amount of Vietnamese food that’s take home-friendly and easily reheatable at home.

We had a day off sometime back and did a pizza crawl of LA…Pane Bianco, Schellz, Quarter Sheets. We were incredibly stuffed, but a great adventure.

Great suggestions so far, thanks all! I’m going to keep the first post updated with a running shortlist of our top picks. If you see something on my shortlist but think there’s a better option for that type of cuisine, holler at me!

I’ve been to Connie and Ted’s, like it a lot, my girlfriend prefers the lobster roll at Broad Street by a hair, though it sounds like we’ll be trying Royal Lobster this time!

Langers
Seaharbour (unless you want more like new American Chinese fusion then go to yangs)
Holy basil atwater
Mini kabob

Those would be my choices

Thanks for the great recs! Gf and I did a 10+ stop taco crawl a few years ago, which, while a blast, was absolutely exhausting. I’m sure you know the feeling. I think we’re going to skip a full on crawl this week, though not opposed to a bang bang if convenient. Also probably skipping pizza/Italian, been to nearly every notable spot.

Love Gjelina, we’ve been many times but want to try new places so it’s a skip for this week, though I’m sure we’ll be back soon.

If you want grilled meats, why not consider Hamlet’s Kitchen.

Superior grilled meats to mini kabob IMO but sides are not as good.

Lobsta Truck? I don’t know it’s the “best” b/c I’ve never Royal Lobster and it’s been yrs since I’ve had it, but it’s the only lobster roll I would willing eat (and the truck is now mainly in Burbank/Pasadena/South Pas w/ some limited time in Sherman Oaks, which is why I haven’t had it in awhile).

I like the Little Saigon idea (it’s a place I’d like to go to but the drive is… off putting).

I see.

I agree with others on Holy Basil over Luv2Eat. My personal choice, however, would be Jitlada. It’s not as refined as Holy Basil, and it’s not as safe a choice, but it’s more exciting on the exotic and spicy end.

Also, I would choose Adana over Mini Kabob. I’m not saying that the food at Adana is better—haven’t eaten enough at both places to make that comparison. But the fact that Adana has a dining room and Mini Kabob does not makes Adana the easy choice for me.

not sure if you’ve been to saffy’s for lunch but it’s a different menu from dinner, pita and focaccia sandwiches

It just requires one day of “we don’t have much to do today…let’s go on an adventure” spirit.

The one cuisine we’d definitely like to hit that we don’t have covered is Mexican. La Casita Mexicana is talked about highly. Mercado González looks interesting and would be perfect for a series of bangs. Thoughts on these two, or any others? Best authentic Mexican restaurant in LA?
