I’ll be there tonight. I have had mixed experiences (long lines despite high cost, mainly) in the past but hoping tonight will be better.
How was it? We went last year and enjoyed the “smaller” more focused events than those grand tasting events for the reasons you mentioned above. We found the crowds less suffocating and easier access to food.
Was there Saturday. You really have to pony up for the VIP tix to avoid the lines for the first hour (I didn’t have to pay luckily, company was a sponsor), and also to meet Justin from Anajak and Jordan Kalb who’s activation was suitably insane. Once they let in the GA group some of the lines were insane. Was a fun night with great food. Highlight for me was Baroo’s dish. Also love Anajak’s dish, Cobi’s rendang and the Hong Kong French Toast ice cream from wanderlust. Also met Daniel from Pizzana and have a slice of Cacio e pepe pizza, and got to chat with Rob Gentile of Stella to find out that we both buy our Iberico pressa from the same company. No real misses. Lot’s of good agave based spirits and drinks as well. Good time.
Funny story, I was at Jame for dinner before a concert earlier in the week and as most know all their signature cocktails are named after LA chefs. Have to admit that Rob Gentile was the only one I didn’t know off the top of my head. Well now I do. LOL
I went Friday
Had a great time - seemed a bit more Mexi-centric this year, many, many taco’s (delicious).
Standouts for me were Bee Taqueria, Villa’s Tacos, Ronan, Baroo, Meteora, Si Mon, Il Mas Bakery (lahmajun - fantastic), Lobster Roll (Saltie Girl)
SoulPhil - I don’t know this company (catering, perhaps) but had a great chicken wing
Seeing Rampage (Ram’s Mascot) and the Vince Lombardi Trophy was very cool
As MVJPL points out, if you don’t go VIP (which is really pricey), the lines make it nearly impossible to taste very much.
I had a co worker who arrived quite late (met her on my way out) and she said the last 30 minutes the lines were much smaller and only a few stands had run out of food so that’s another option.
I was also there on Friday. I’ve been going VIP for the past few years as they will usually send out a 25% discount code to past VIP ticket holders if it hasn’t sold out by the weekend before and it’s definitely the way to go because that first hour is key. I sampled all the booths before the general admission ticketholders got in, then spent the next few hours drinking.
Highlights were Baroo, Saltie Girl, Crudo e Nudo, Pasjoli, Mariscos Jalisco, and Guelaguetza. Also talked to the owners of Thatcher’s Wine, the new wine shop in Brentwood. They seem really nice and gave me a $15 G.C. to their shop.
