Pizzeria Mozza Newport Beach. Everything was delicious, the only small quibble was how the prosciutto was sliced. A couple of pieces looked mangled. Golden beets with yogurt, feta and herbs was a pleasant surprise. Excellent chocolate chip cookies. A healthy amount of salt.
Stopped at Grand Central Market for the first time in a while. Had my eye on Villas but the line was ridiculous and no line at Roast to Go. Old reliable still comes through!
Dad was with me and had never been to GCM despite living in LA for decades. He loved the experience.
Coming back from La Quinta meant I finally got to try Mountain House in Rowland Heights. Honestly really enjoyed it. Vibes are ridiculous.
Didn’t care for the hanging pork that much but the fish in green pepper went hard
Is this the “I went to school in Boston” of Coachella?
I kid. And Mapo looks good!
Cindy’s Kitchen (Rowland Heights) -
Arriving after 7PM for dinner risks a cold deli case that’s been cleared out by folks who were smart to get there earlier.
Still delicious, but I had a hankering for the cucumbers and the cold tofu salad…
Not pictured: stir-fried eggplant (so good!), pork & shredded bamboo
I guess I’m gonna have to go back.
Yeah, the idiomatic “early bird gets the worm” definitely applies at Cindy’s…
Like, ridiculous in a good way? ![]()
Lolol this is the “I would have gone to Coachella but there wasn’t enough indie rock” so instead I played golf and stayed at a relative’s place.
Drove home earlier than usual to beat the Coachella crowds!
Like fountains and trees within the restaurants and very soothing Chinese instrumental music. Corny but also pleasant?
Yoko in Buena Park in the same strip mall as Jang Mo Jip and Stereoscope Coffee. The OG tonkatsu place. Says they’ve sold over 2 million tonkatsu since 2005. That’s a little under 300 per day. They provide roasted sesame seeds in a mortar with pestle to grind up the seeds before they add the sauce.
Combo meals come with udon, soba or a sushi roll. Perfect fry. Don’t sleep on that potato ball.
Norm’s La Cienega!
Historical landmark. That Googie architecture! I have always wanted to eat here.
Quick jaunt over on a late Sunday/early Monday. Best time to drive around town.
Decaf to drink and copious amounts of ketchup, black pepper, tapatio for the omelette and potatoes
Kaya toast from Coconut & Co. Soooo good ![]()
Seasonals from Chikara Mochi
Oysters! Super fresh from Quality Seafood, Redondo Beach
Prospect Menu
possibly at Spruce too
four star seafood also stocks white asparagus currently, although it would require making it yourself. maybe they would point you towards restaurants that are buying it from them
Terrific meal at Roberta’s. QC issues post-pandemic have been sorted out.
I’d forgotten how much I like their crust. Quite different than Sei’s: Slightly sweeter and chewier with pronounced Maillard flavors.
Pizzas were absolutely delicious, snap pea salad still a standout. Grilled cherries on ricotta for dessert hit just right.
Sei holds a special place in my heart but Roberta’s is right up there, playing in the same ballpark.
Mozzarella, Parmesan, Manila clam, parsley, garlic,Calabrian chili, lemon

Grilled cherries on Ricotta
Made an inaugural trip to Frank & Musso Grill with a friend.
This place is frozen in time and in the best of ways. Tuxedoed service staff. An old school bar staffed by folks who know what a stiff drink is. Perhaps the room could use some loving restoration to bring some sparkle, but maybe the wear is part of the charm.
The martinis will mess you up if you aren’t careful, but I love that I get the excess in a ice-chilled shaker.
The steak tartare wasn’t the best in town, but it was good.
And I just had to order the sand dabs…because it’s something I can’t find anywhere.
It’s possible that I may have forgotten what I had for dessert, but I know I didn’t hate it.
The experience was real fun. This my friend’s favorite place, and I can understand why she goes so often. The old Hollywood vibe is rather nice and things are a little extravagant here. Loved that I finally made it to this beloved institution.
I love Musso for its old school charm and history. Some dishes are good, just got to navigate the menu well. I tend to avoid the Italian section (just go to Dan Tana’s for that kind of American Italian food). The sand dabs are pretty good - I’ve always had them at Tadich Grill in SF. I usually get a consomme and some fried oysters as an app to start and then the prime rib or lamb’s kidneys and bacon. May Musso & Frank Grill go for another 100 years.
Indeed, the side car is a whole extra. Stiff drinks, for sure. I think the key is get there at least half an hour before your reservation so you don’t rush the sidecar before closing out at the bar.
