I think a cross-post link (or whatever the technical turn is) would be okay, too.
Pomegranate. Nothing like it in LA to my knowledge.
In Glendale, we liked the Georgian / Armenian restaurant Havlabar–a recommendation of Caleb. Some of the menu items appear to overlap.
I haven’t tried Havlabar yet because (1) Glendale and (2) reports that people smoke there (which might be authentically Georgian).
Good recco in SD! I’m georgian myself so I usually don’t go out for georgian food but maybe we’ll give it a try…
Pizzeria mozza x L’industrie
Al Pastor Tacos Don Goyo
Guisado tacos from Asadero Chikali
Pie n Burger
Sushi Kisen
Unfortunately, I cannot refute the reports of smoking in Havlabar.
I did Havlabar for lunch a few months ago and really liked it. It’s cool that you get your own wicker semi-cabana. There weren’t any other customers, just friends of the people who work there hanging out, but no smoking occurred either way.
How was Paloma? I think there’s only one other recent post about the place.
I liked it, nice patio. Had a green juice that was good, loved the quality of the tomatoes in the greek salad the tuna was a good sized portion for the price, nothing mind blowing but nice Mediterranean flavors. The burger, a chuck brisket blend iirc was really beefy. I had to look up the James Beard thing, looks like he mixed in grated onion and added cream to the blend so maybe that’s what is going on here.
Say it isn’t so! Yakitoriya announced on their instagram that they are closing. Not sure if tonight is their last night of service. Very very sad news.
Edit: from the wording on their post, their last night of service was yesterday
wowwww so sad to hear that place was great
Just called them, last night of service is tomorrow!
@CiaoBob last chance to go eat Toshi’s amazing skewers. Do you know why they’re closing?
I believe they were bought out by Gindaco (Japanese chain). My speculation is that sometimes a deal is too good to pass up, especially as one nears retirement age…
I know
I think the 31st is it
I paid my respects a few times this week.
Mika told me they got an offer they couldn’t refuse on the space.
I know their plan to get a new space - they are keeping their name and phone number. But doubt that will happen all that quickly. They do deserve a nice rest.
Nep (Irvine)
Trying another Kei Concepts restaurant.
Only managed to take one photo…garlic noodles with shrimp
Not pictured: banh mi chao beef belly and goi with shrimp.
It was fine. The noodles were good and were accompanied by some chargrilled shrimp. I appreciated the paper thin shells…because it would have been a pain in the ass to peel them. The sizzling banh mi platter had nice components and the beef belly reminded me of my Mom’s bo luc lac sauce. But the dish is pretty rich…it would benefit from a fresh or pickled element. The goi salad came with lovely poached shrimp and fresh veggies, but the dressing was muted and one note…I would have appreciated it to be more acidic.
Wanderlust Creamery
The flavors here are wild and plentiful.
While the mango sticky rice was more coconut-y than I had in mind, I appreciated that it’s not too sweet.
My combo cup of che thai, verbena yakult & white peach, and noyaux & plum jam was really delicious. The che Thai really does taste like the one I had recently at Bake & Che.
