Went to banh xeo quan in rosemead today. Packed full of old viet ladies and had a banh xeo aka Vietnamese crepe. Was delicious crunchy and had mushrooms (first time Ive seen mushrooms used in a banh xeo). Their fish paste dipping sauce along with the chili sauce took it over the top.
Wondering if any ftcers know any other places that they’d recommend banh xeo at in LA/OC?
I kinda refuse to go to pok pok here in LA. Ive been to a couple of his original restaurants in Portland and never have been really impressed. The only thing I enjoy is the fish sauce wings.
I feel like there’s so much better Thai here for a cheaper price. Additionally, the overall reception to his food in LA has been lukewarm at best.
If I ever go I’ll be sure to give the Thai crepe a try tho!
Yeah, this isn’t the formal restaurant, this is the take out place over by Chego. So it’s very easy just to go in, order the crepe and move on to more deliciousness like Little Jewel.
Thanks for this post. It got me off my ass to try the Banh Xeo here and the Duck Herb Soup (Mi Vit Tiem) at Banh Xeo Quan. Both were awesome. One of the best banh xeo’s I’ve had outside of Vietnam. Kills Van by a mile. Loved the Mi Vit Tiem so much, took an order to go. The family also has a wonderful story. They were boat people who suffered significant hardship before coming to America. They are conscientious, community minded and pay it forward. The restaurant is closed from March 16- April 3 re-opening April 4th. They will be traveling to support the orphanage he father came from near Saigon.
The unfortunately named Summer Rolls in Rosemead has expanded their menu, which includes quite possibly the best banh xeo I’ve ever had. Great crisp but more importantly the batter had an insane flavor that I’m not used to. Combined with significantly higher quality ingredients than par (whole large shrimp, mushrooms, calamari), you get something quite above average.
there’s actually several variations of banh xeo in Vietnam. In America, we’re just used to the southern style which are the really big ones. The central style is much smaller, even smaller than the summer rolls. more like the size of a large taco… Hue Oi does a good small central style one and they call it banh khoai.
Typically it’s just rice flour but the batter can also vary too–some add mung bean either flour or paste so wondering if that’s what @ns1 tasting?
