Banh xeo in LA/OC?

Went to banh xeo quan in rosemead today. Packed full of old viet ladies and had a banh xeo aka Vietnamese crepe. Was delicious crunchy and had mushrooms (first time Ive seen mushrooms used in a banh xeo). Their fish paste dipping sauce along with the chili sauce took it over the top.

Wondering if any ftcers know any other places that they’d recommend banh xeo at in LA/OC?

Van’s on Brookhurst, in Garden Grove, serves a nice one.

Not exactly Banh Xeo, but the crepe at Pok Pok Phat Thai is actually the best thing on their menu. Amazingly crisp.

I kinda refuse to go to pok pok here in LA. Ive been to a couple of his original restaurants in Portland and never have been really impressed. The only thing I enjoy is the fish sauce wings.

I feel like there’s so much better Thai here for a cheaper price. Additionally, the overall reception to his food in LA has been lukewarm at best.

If I ever go I’ll be sure to give the Thai crepe a try tho!

Yeah, this isn’t the formal restaurant, this is the take out place over by Chego. So it’s very easy just to go in, order the crepe and move on to more deliciousness like Little Jewel.

Vietnam House in SG is my benchmark. Best Veg plate. Van’s in Westminster is huge and cheap. Edit: Vans in Garden Grove.

+1 on the omelet. Not at all like banh xeo, but really delicious.

Thanks for this post. It got me off my ass to try the Banh Xeo here and the Duck Herb Soup (Mi Vit Tiem) at Banh Xeo Quan. Both were awesome. One of the best banh xeo’s I’ve had outside of Vietnam. Kills Van by a mile. Loved the Mi Vit Tiem so much, took an order to go. The family also has a wonderful story. They were boat people who suffered significant hardship before coming to America. They are conscientious, community minded and pay it forward. The restaurant is closed from March 16- April 3 re-opening April 4th. They will be traveling to support the orphanage he father came from near Saigon.

2018 bump

The unfortunately named Summer Rolls in Rosemead has expanded their menu, which includes quite possibly the best banh xeo I’ve ever had. Great crisp but more importantly the batter had an insane flavor that I’m not used to. Combined with significantly higher quality ingredients than par (whole large shrimp, mushrooms, calamari), you get something quite above average.

That looks so very correct.
Too many banh xeo are overly oily and unevenly cooked.
I need this right now.

One of my favorite Vietnamese dishes!!!

there’s actually several variations of banh xeo in Vietnam. In America, we’re just used to the southern style which are the really big ones. The central style is much smaller, even smaller than the summer rolls. more like the size of a large taco… Hue Oi does a good small central style one and they call it banh khoai.

Typically it’s just rice flour but the batter can also vary too–some add mung bean either flour or paste so wondering if that’s what @ns1 tasting?

This is why I love this site. Thank you for the knowledge

Definitely a strong mungbean taste. Needs more research.

$12 banh xeo @ Summer Rolls. I wonder what Van’s charges these days.

Tumeric? I remember my Mom’s batter having tumeric in it.

Needs more research but that would not be surprising. We may have over ordered so I wasn’t exactly analyzing every bite haha.

Would also like to mention that at one point we had 4 different kinds of fish sauce on the table, so Summer Rolls is definitely on top of their game.

yes, for sure they all have the turmeric to make the yellow color.
